Put a lid on that: The Coca-Cola Foundation, Atlanta, has announced it is contributing $1 million to The Recycling Partnership, Falls Church, Virginia, to support a new coastal and waterway communities grant program to provide lidded carts to targeted communities from the shorelines of Southeast Texas up to Maine, along the Mississippi River and Great Lakes and in the Pacific Northwest.
“We know from experience and research that providing lidded curbside recycling carts is part of the solution to curbing marine debris in developed countries,” says Keefe Harrison, CEO of The Recycling Partnership. “By providing households with a lidded container, we can help ensure that recyclables stay in the recycling stream and don’t end up in our oceans, rivers
Play it again
There’s no toying around when it comes to recycling dolls and action figures made by Hasbro Inc. The global play and entertainment company, headquartered in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, has launched a new toy and game recycling pilot program with TerraCycle, a Trenton, New Jersey-based leader in product recycling. During the pilot program, consumers can collect and send their used Hasbro toys and games to TerraCycle.
Though toys and games technically are recyclable, the high cost of recycling the mixed plastics contained in these products makes it impractical, TerraCycle says.
The program is open to all Hasbro toys and games, including plastic and electronic toys, action figures, dolls, plush and other types of toys.
Championing demand
The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) program that is designed to expand market demand for recycled resins and improve plastic recycling in North America has announced new participants during the Washington-based trade organization’s June meeting.
Four companies joined the APR Recycling Demand Champions Campaign:
- Avangard Innovative, a Houston-based plastics recycler
and provider of waste management and recycling services; - EcoProducts, a sustainable food service packaging brand based in Boulder, Colorado;
- Unilever, with global headquarters in the U.K. and U.S. headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey; and
- UPM Raflatac, a Helsinki-based global supplier of pressure-sensitive label materials.
