Germany-based red metals producer Wieland Group says it has been awarded a silver medal after a recent sustainability evaluation conducted by Paris-based EcoVadis.

The copper and brass company received 62 out of 100 points and has “landed in the top 25 percent of the companies evaluated” by the global sustainability ratings provider.

Wieland calls the attainment of the EcoVadis silver medal “another positive result in the consistent implementation of the sustainability strategy and an improvement compared to the bronze medal from the previous year.”

“Positive rating results from EcoVadis or most recently from the [London-based] Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) show us, on the one hand, that we are on the right track,” Wieland Group CEO Erwin Mayr says.

Mayr says the company’s priority lies with the continuous improvement of Wieland's actual sustainability performance, but such audits and ratings “serve to identify potential areas for action as part of our sustainability strategy."

Mayr continues, “Rating results such as those from EcoVadis acknowledge the ambitious goals that we at Wieland are achieving together. Our target is to further improve Wieland’s sustainability performance and, thus, our rating results in the next assessment.”

Wieland describes itself as one of the world's leading suppliers of semifinished copper and copper alloy products. It greatly increased its footprint in North America in 2019 with the acquisition of Global Brass and Copper Holdings, which included the assets of Olin Brass and Chase Brass. In 2021, Wieland announced its intention to build a recycled-content copper refinery in Kentucky.
