Stouffville, Ontario-based DMS Metals Ltd. has commissioned an M6090 modular shredder and downstream nonferrous sorting system supplied by Buffalo, New York-based Wendt Corp.
DMS Metals, established in 1974, is a second-generation family-run business currently being led by Andrew and Paul Gallo. DMS and Wendt Corp. say the purchase of the shredding system provides DMS with additional versatility and independence while aiding in its overall growth strategy.
At its facility located 30 minutes north of Toronto, DMS Metals says it has experienced an increase in volumes the last few years that drove the need to purchase its first shredder to join its shears and balers. “With growing volumes, we realized that a shredder would be a valuable upgrade to our operation,” says Andrew Gallo, president of DMS Metals.
Shredding primarily cars, light sheet iron and aluminum products, the shredder has benefited the company by allowing it to be more versatile and competitive on the buying and selling sides of the business, the Gallos say.
Adds Andrew Gallo, “The Wendt M6090 was right-sized for our operation and provides us the versatility to process many different grades of material and at much higher volumes.”
The Wendt shredder, installed in March, features a disc rotor made by Iowa-based Bowe Machine Co. and a 2,500-horsepower motor. The shredding plant is equipped with an infeed conveyor and dual mag-stand with electromagnetic drums. The plant’s modular design features include a pre-fabricated motor enclosure and platform; a remote prewired e-house; a control pulpit; a prefabricated fluid powerhouse; and a structural steel frame that allowed the shredder to be installed on a flat concrete pad.
The company’s equipment purchase also included a nonferrous recovery system containing eddy current separators designed to recover shredded aluminum (zorba). “A shredding plant without a nonferrous system is like a car with no wheels,” remarks Andrew Gallo. “It is a good start, but it won’t get you very far. The nonferrous system heavily contributes to the profitability of the overall process.”
Continues Gallo, “A shredder is a unique piece of machinery. When purchasing equipment of this magnitude, you are diving into a long-term partnership with the company that you purchase it from. Wendt’s service department is available 24-7 and is always extremely helpful and professional. It reflects their attentiveness to customer service and reaffirms the confidence we’ve placed in partnering with Wendt.”
DMS Metals indicates it has added 10 employees to its team since commissioning the shredding plant and nonferrous system in March. With a 25-acre facility, DMS says there remains the potential to continue its partnership with Wendt Corp. to expand its nonferrous downstream capabilities.
