The Tomra Collection business unit of Norway-based Tomra Systems ASA is now offering its R2 reverse vending machine (RVM) model, which it says enables even smaller stores to offer the convenience of pouring 100-plus empty drink containers for recycling, into an RVM.
Debuting along with the R2 are two developments in deposit refund payouts that involve digital vouchers made directly to a user’s mobile browser and additional options to donate to charities.
Tomra says its R2 RVM as offeres the "next generation" in multifeed returns, where consumers pour in bags of multiple drink containers at once, building on the success of its R1 model.
The company says the R2’s smaller physical footprint fits a wider range of stores and already has been tested in stores in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands.
Other differences include a “minimalist design," with a wall-mounted and compact unit facing the consumer, made to be more stylish, discreet and accessible in the store environment.
It also makes the most of screen to give more visual guidance and better user flow to make the process more intuitive for end users, and provide more features for user accessibility.
Tomra has offered return money charitable donation options in the past, but says retailers have until now been able to add up to four charities or community organizations to which individuals can choose to donate their deposit refunds. With the R2 model, they have the ability to add up to nine on-screen donation partners. Donation partners can be set by the retail chain or individual store, which can change the list of charities as often as desired.
Tomra says the new function gives retailers a unique opportunity to make a difference in the local community, build charity partnerships, and create timely campaigns to engage shoppers and grow store loyalty.
“Today’s launch makes you rethink recycling and the reverse vending user experience,” says Jonas Døvik, product manager with Tomra Collection. “It brings benefit for all reverse vending stakeholders—with Tomra R2’s convenience for both retailers and recyclers, digital vouchers for consumers and greater donation opportunities to contribute to the wider community.
“We have taken a truly user-centric approach to the design and development of Tomra R2, and we have been excited to get both consumers’ and retailers’ insights to further refine the products.”
