TerraCycle, a Trenton, New Jersey-based recycler, has acquired Complete Recycling Solutions (CRS), a Fall River, Massachusetts-based universal waste recycler. TerraCycle primarily manages material streams that municipal recycling companies likely won’t recycle in light of cost issues, and the company’s acquisition of CRS contributes to its lighting and electronics recycling efforts.

“The acquisition of Complete Recycling Solutions is an exciting next step in TerraCycle’s journey to reduce waste,” TerraCycle CEO Tom Szaky says. “We entered the universal waste business in the U.S. in 2016 with the acquisition of Air Cycle Corp., now TerraCycle Regulated Waste.

“With Complete Recycling [Solutions], which will continue to be led by former owner, [co-founder and CEO] Keith Boyea, we inherit a business known for excellent and versatile customer service and recycling facilities that can serve both of our U.S. businesses.”

CRS was established in 2002 and specializes in recycling lighting implements, including all mercury-bearing lamps, electronics and cathode ray tubes, mercury devices, batteries, printed circuit board (PCB) and non-PCB lighting ballasts. Additionally, CRS uses lamp recycling and mercury distillation equipment that automatically disassembles various lamp types into their basic components and allows them to be reused in the marketplace. The company has been certified to the Responsible Recycling (R2) Standard for Electronics Recyclers developed by SERI, which is an American National Standards Institute- accredited standards development organization.

“TerraCycle is the perfect partner and shares our mission to provide state-of-the-art solutions for recycling lighting and electronics waste,” Boyea says. “Together, with our combined resources, we will have greater access to expand the reach of our platforms, expand our collective customer base and bring a broader range of services to the businesses we serve.”
