Wire and cable producer Southwire has joined the Washington-based Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC), an industry trade group that has helped fund research and infrastructure for vinyl recycling.
Carrollton, Georgia-based Southwire specializes in the production of electrical wire and cable and employing more than 10,000 people, and many of the firm’s wire products are surrounded by a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating or jacket.
“We are proud to welcome Southwire into the VSC,” VSC Executive Director Jay Thomas says. “Southwire’s position as a preeminent wire and cable manufacturer will enhance our collective efforts towards innovation and sustainability. We look forward to their participation and contributions to the VSC.”
The VSC attracted eight new members last year, with one of those being Chicago-based recycling firm The Imperial Group.
“We are excited to tap into this network of sustainable companies as we grow our PVC recycling operations,” Zach Spellman, president of the Imperial Group, said when the company’s membership was announced.
In Europe, France-based Nexans—like Southwire, a producer of wire and cable—has invested to become directly involved in wire and cable recycling, with the procurement of copper being one of its stated goals.
A Southwire sustainability report covering 2022 indicated that year the company used up to 20 percent recycled-content copper in some of its products and was using recycled-content plastic in some of the spools around which its wire is wrapped.
“We are excited to join the VSC and align ourselves with other companies in the PVC industry working toward a more sustainable future," says Sal Porras, director of PVC compound at Southwire. "Joining this network will give us opportunities to tap into industry innovation and lend our position as leaders in wire and cable to ensure that our PVC usage delivers quality and sustainable products.”
