In March, St. Louis-based recycling company Shapiro celebrates 120 years in business. The global leader in industrial recycling provides customized recycling programs and sustainability solutions to manufacturing partners across various industries.
The journey began in 1884 when Harry Shapiro emigrated to the U.S. from Russia and listed his occupation as “junk peddler” on his declaration of intention. In 1904, Harry’s brother, Max, began collecting scrap metal with a horse and buggy. Over the decades, Shapiro has grown into a company that helps environmentally conscious manufacturers reach their sustainability goals.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Shapiro expanded its services and footprint, moving into new markets and diversifying its recycling capabilities. The turn of the millennium saw further expansion and technological advancements, including the launch of state-of-the-art facilities and the development of a Sustainability Dashboard.
The company’s achievements include receiving multiple Alcoa Strategic Supplier Awards and launching Circular by Shapiro, which helps its original equipment manufacturers transition to a circular economy with service-based sustainability management solutions, including dashboards to simplify ESG reporting, program development for custom master alloys and equipment like CNC fluid recovery systems, further solidifying Shapiro's commitment to environmental stewardship and circular economy principles.
"As we celebrate 120 years of innovation and sustainability, we are reminded of our responsibility to the planet and future generations," Shapiro CEO Bob Alvarez says. "Our journey from a small family business to an industry leader reflects our commitment to continuous improvement, environmental sustainability and the circular economy. We're excited for what the future holds and remain dedicated to pioneering solutions that benefit our partners, communities and the planet."
