California-based scrap metal company SA Recycling LLC has been recognized by Newsweek in its “America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity 2023” list, which honors companies that received at least four stars in its five-star scoring system.
SA Recycling, which has 1,600 employees with $1.45 billion in annual revenue, earned four and a half stars in the Newsweek “Financial Services and Business Services” category.
In a 2022 Recycling Today profile of the company, CEO George Adams described a workplace culture that encourages employee advancement. “We listen to the people on the ground doing the job—the crane operator, the metal sorter,” the article quotes Adams as saying. “My job is to support them and let them do their jobs. That’s the way we try to conduct our business: to support and empower people and let them do their jobs.”
In his 2022 interview with Recycling Today and his 2016 book, “Create the Connection: 25 Surefire Strategies for Success in Leadership and Life,” Adams described incidents where SA Recycling quickly identified women and first-generation immigrants as people ready to advance to positions of increasing responsibility.
SA Recycling is not the only company with recycling operations to make the 2023 Newsweek list. Earning a five-star ranking on the same list are Phoenix-based Republic Services and Houston-based WM, scoring their five stars in the Newsweek “Consumer” category.
Charlotte, North Carolina-based ferrous scrap consumer Nucor Corp. earned five stars in Newsweek’s “Energy, Resources and Industrials” category, while Alcoa Corp. scored four and a half stars and Kaiser Aluminum four stars in the same category.
In the paper and board recycling sector, mill and recycling plant operator Pratt Industries received a four-star ranking in Newsweek’s “Energy, Resources and Industrials” category.
Georgia-Pacific, which operates recycled-content paperboard mills and the Georgia-Pacific Recycling business unit, also earned a four-star score in the same category.
