Sheboygan, Wisconsin-based Polywrap Recycling Inc. has launched the Rack’n Pak Recycle Bagging System with Vent Press Bags to aid companies in recycling low-density polyethylene (LDPE) generated in their facilities. Originally released in 2015, it has led to the recycling of more than 220 million pounds of plastic film, Polywrap claims.

“Unfortunately, only about 5 to 7 percent of plastic wrap and bags are recycled,” Jim Theodoroff, PolyWrap president and co-owner, says. “The rest ends up in landfills, not only taking up valuable space but also wasting a material that can and should be recycled.”

Similar to other recyclables, such as scrap metal and cardboard, LDPE can be sold to recycling facilities in bulk. “Not only is [the Rack’n Pak system] great for the environment, but it’s also good for the company’s bottom line,” Theodoroff adds.

According to Polywrap Recycling, the Rack’n Pak system is designed to be lightweight, portable and easy for companies to install, expediting the collection of LDPE in their facilities. The Vent Press Bags are made from recyclable plastic film and can be placed into a baler for recycling in bulk resale. For smaller quantities, bags can be taken to designated recycling locations.

“It’s a great start, but more needs to be done,” Jeff Haen, Polywrap co-owner, says. “We need to get the word out that plastic film is recyclable. We also need to educate business leaders and warehouse managers on how easy it can be done and make them aware that there is potential profit in implementing this simple change.”
