Paper Recycling Conference Europe Offers Extensive Programming

The conference will be held Nov. 9-10 in Barcelona, Spain.


Paper Recycling Conference Europe, hosted by the Recycling Today Media Group, Cleveland, and Pira International, Surrey, U.K., will offer programming designed for recovered fiber traders and recyclers to excel in a global marketplace. Panels of industry experts from around the globe have been tapped to provide their insights during the two-day event, slated for 9-10 November in Barcelona.

Session dates, descriptions and speakers are as follows:

Wednesday 9 November:

  • Market Overview – The opening session offers a perspective on economic and market conditions in Europe and the factors likely to affect the paper and board industry in the near future. Jim Keefe, executive vice president, Recycling Today Media Group will give opening remarks. Clive Suckling, U.K. and global leader, forest, paper and packaging industry, PWC, U.K. will discuss the macro-economic perspective and assessment of implications for paper and paper recycling including the shifting global economic activity, trade patterns and demographics as well as implications for recovered paper both in the near and long term. David Powlson, principal, Poyry Management Consulting Ltd., U.K., will offer advice on managing the tightening of the supply/demand balance of recovered fibre.
     
  • End of Waste Legislation – This session will focus on the impact this regulation will have on the industry and new opportunities that will arise as recovered paper becomes a product that is no longer waste. Merja Helander, president of EPRA, Finland, will provide opening remarks. David Barrio, director, ASPAPEL, Spain, will present on criteria and legislation. The session will conclude with Ross Bartleyo, environmental and technical director, of the Bureau of International Recycling, Belgium, discussing the resulting impacts on the recovered paper industry from End of Waste.
     
  • A Quality Quandary – Speakers address the quality challenges inherent in collecting more fibre in co-mingled methods and the steps being taken to meet those challenges and the challenge posed by the implementation of quality inspections in key export markets. Opening remarks will be provided by Henri Varmeulen, vice president recovered paper, Smurfit Kappa, Netherlands. He will also present on decreasing fiber quality, the increasing number of quality standards and how this will impact recycling in the future.
     
  • Q&A with Industry Leader – The speaker, yet to be announced, will engage with attendees for a question and answer period addressing the issues facing the recovered fibre industry.

Thursday 10 November:

  • Trading Triangle – This session will offer the trading view from all aspects of the triangle. Bill Moore, president, Moore & Associates, U.S., will provide opening remarks. Panelists for this session include Niels van Binsbergen, managing director, ACN Europe, Netherlands; Francisco Donoso, director, Reciclajes Dolaf, Spain; Philippe Chantrain, sales and marketing manager, Cellmark, Sweden; and Marc Forman, president, GP Harmon Recycling, U.S.
     
  • Future Outlook of the Paper and Board Industry – This session will focus on the opportunities and threats that are currently facing the paper and board industries and what the future holds for the various sectors that make up these industries. Graham Moore, senior consultant – paper, Pira International, U.K., will provide opening remarks. Teresa Presas, director general, CEPI, Belgium, will discuss threats and opportunities for the paper and board industry. Marcin Szwarc, market intelligence and research manager, Mondi Group, Poland, will explore the future of paper and paperboard packaging, and Peter Phippen, managing director, BBC Magazines, U.K., will provide an outlook for magazine publishing.
     
  • Whose Fibre is It? – This session considers the movement by generators to market their recovered paper directly and the implications this has for the industry. Jim Keefe, executive vice president, Recycling Today Media Group, will provide opening remarks. Harm Douwe Hitzert, managing director, Reukema Paper Group, Netherlands, will examine the added value of brokerage/trading. Bernard Arrateig, vice president RCP Sourcing, UPM Kymmene, Finland, will offer advice on steering a strategic material sourcing, and Thornton Wenzel, director, Interseroh, Germany, will provide a waste management company’s perspective.

In addition to the rich programming offered, there also will be plenty of opportunities for networking between sessions and at a reception.
