Pacific Rim Recycling Unveils Single-Stream Operations

Pacific Rim Recycling, a Benicia, Calif., recycling operation, opened up a brand new processing facility that is geared toward processing recyclable via a single stream method. The new system began March 1.

The facility will be capable of taking in 30,000 tons of recyclables a year. It will service the Central Contra Costa County residential recycling stream. The facility will be able to process around 15 tons of recyclables an hour, a significant increase from the approximately two tons of recyclables the company was processing before the single stream processing system was built.

Starting March 1, Valley Waste Management will begin modifying its recycling carts that will allow for all the material to be commingled. Previously the collection cart separated fibrous material from containers and other recyclables. It is expected that customers served by Valley Waste Management will have the new single-stream collection carts by the end of April.

“We have built a state of the art single stream processing facility with new technology that separates materials with screens and magnets,” said Steven Moore, CEO of Pacific Rim Recycling. “This simplified process will help us become more efficient”

According to published reports the facility costs $2 million.
