Finland-based Outokumpu has reached an agreement with Purem by Eberspächer, a Germany-based producer of mufflers, catalytic converters and other exhaust system components, for Purem to start using Outokumpu Circle Green recycled-content stainless steel.
The supply agreement also involves Germany-based service center operator Thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe, which will process Circle Green master coils into slit strips and then directly supply and deliver the metal to Purem.
The three companies say the intent of the supply agreement is to reduce emissions from the automotive sector with the world’s first towards-zero stainless steel. Outokumpu says recycled-content Circle Green is made with up to a 92 percent lower carbon footprint than the industry average stainless steel product.
Outokumpu introduced its Circle Green product line last year, saying the stainless steel is made with up to 98 percent recycled content.
“We are at the forefront of decarbonizing the steel industry and the automotive sector is one of where all solutions to cut emissions are heavily needed,” says Niklas Wass, executive vice president with Outokumpu.
“No other stainless steel manufacturer has achieved such low emission levels throughout the entire production chain from raw material extraction to final production. We are happy to start the collaboration with Purem by Eberspächer, offering solutions for both private transport and commercial vehicles, to strive more sustainable mobility in Europe.”
“This cooperation underlines our approach for clean mobility with clear sustainable goals,” says Uwe Ackermann, vice president with Purem by Eberspächer. “This includes the material used in our products. To reduce its carbon footprint is a focal point.”
Purem by Eberspächer supplies exhaust and thermal management systems, plus automotive controls.
