Under a new three-year agreement, Remondis Group company TSR Recycling GmbH & Co. KG., based in Germany, will supply Novelis with 75,000 metric tons of raw materials made from presorted and processed end-of-life aluminum products for the production of aluminum sheet for the automotive sector at its recycling center in Nachterstedt, Germany.
This strategic agreement directly supports the rising market demand for high-recycled-content aluminum, Atlanta-based Novelis says. Such material is crucial as Novelis develops solutions with its automotive customers to use more pre- and postconsumer scrap in new, high-recycled-content automotive aluminum alloys.
Novelis and TSR are market leaders in different areas of the aluminum recycling chain. By partnering, they can accelerate the shift toward a circular economy and foster the decarbonization of the aluminum industry in Europe and beyond, Novelis says.
TSR is one of Europe's leading ferrous and nonferrous recycling companies. By processing approximately 7.2 million metric tons of end-of-life metals annually across its 170 business locations throughout Europe, the company produces recycled raw materials that can be returned to production cycles.
"We are very proud to publicly demonstrate our strong partnership with TSR and to sustainably drive the circularity of our industry through this long-term commitment," says Emilio Braghi, executive vice president of Novelis Inc. and president of Novelis Europe. "This is an important alliance to secure the supply of high-quality processed raw materials to meet our customers' sustainability targets, as well as advancing on our own 2030 journey toward 75 percent recycled content across our products."
Last year, Novelis processed approximately 700,000 metric tons of aluminum scrap in Europe to produce low-carbon, circular aluminum solutions for the market. The company says it plans to increase this amount by roughly 50,000 metric tons in its current fiscal year. Its plant in Nachterstedt supplies rolled aluminum products to markets worldwide using the latest cold-rolling technology, a state-of-the-art laser workshop and continuous annealing and finishing lines. It is also home to the world’s largest aluminum recycling center and annually produces up to 400,000 metric tons of aluminum sheet ingot from recycled material.
"At TSR, we are excited to deepen our collaboration with Novelis based on our joint purpose to maximize circularity and decrease carbon emissions, conserve natural resources and reduce energy of the material industries," Denis Reuter, chief operating officer of TSR Group, says. "Ensuring that valuable resources are reused and repurposed benefits both our businesses and the planet. By working together, we can lead the transition toward a circular economy for the automotive sector and beyond. We are proud that, thanks to our innovative Europewide processing lines, we can contribute to this effort."
