Matalco, a sister company to the recycling firm Triple M Metals, headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, has opened its new secondary aluminum plant in Lordstown, Ohio.
The company has been in startup mode since this past March and has been producing aluminum billet. It broke ground on the plant Sept. 17, 2014, and construction started the following month.
Matalco also operates a facility in Canton, Ohio, as well as a plant at its Toronto headquarters.
The facility, roughly 225,000 square feet in size, will primarily consume aluminum, scrap along with some aluminum P1020 ingot mixed in. The plant will make either log or cut-to-size billet, according to Robert Roscetti, vice president of Matalco U.S. Inc.
Roscetti adds that the Lordstown location, in northeastern Ohio, is ideal because of a combination of factors, including the proximity to both existing and prospective customers; an excellent incentive package offered by the state of Ohio, which included property tax and income tax credits and grant money; and on-site rail and excellent highway access.
Triple M Metals will provide the new Matalco facility with sourcing and procurement capabilities, which, Roscetti says, will assure the Lordstown plant a ready and stable supply of aluminum scrap while “representing a significant advantage that Matalco has over its competitors.”
“Thus far, Matalco is on track to achieve its first year forecasted production target of 90 million pounds. The market remains stable with good demand and which we feel will continue into 2017,” he says.
When the Lordstown plant is fully operational, Matalco says it will be the largest producer of high-quality secondary billet in North America. Combined, the company will be producing more than 700 million pounds of finished aluminum product per year.
