Gränges Americas Inc. has signed a 10-year agreement with Waverly, Tennessee-based Scepter Inc., which will supply scrap-based aluminum ingots for its rolling and recycling centers in the United States. By securing access to recycled and low-carbon input materials, Gränges can offer circular and sustainable aluminum products to its customers and achieve its 2040 net-zero goal.

The carbon emissions intensity of the ingots to be supplied by Scepter is estimated to be 0.3 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per ton of aluminum. Additionally, Gränges plans to power its production processes with renewable electricity, which will strengthen Gränges’ capability to offer customers and end users industry-leading circular and sustainable aluminum solutions, the company says.

Gränges has a goal to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42 percent by 2030 from the 2021 baseline year and its Scope 3 GHG emissions (which are from purchased goods and services, including metal purchases, fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, business travel and downstream transportation and distribution) by 57 percent per ton of packed product. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Gränges’ climate goals for near-term 2030 and net-zero 2040, meaning they are aligned with the latest climate science and consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement and that Gränges is committed to driving emission reductions in line with science.

“Gränges is committed to reducing the carbon footprint of our products and, thereby, also helping our customers on their decarbonization journey,” Gränges Americas President Patrick Lawlor says. “This agreement is a significant step towards advancing our sustainability goals and providing low-carbon solutions for our customers. This helps Gränges remain at the forefront in our industry as it enables us to offer closed-loop recycling and circularity partnerships to our customers in the HVAC, specialty packaging, building and construction and automotive industries.”

Gränges says the companies share a vision to create a more sustainable future and are committed to reducing the climate impact of aluminum foil production, conserving resources and delivering innovative customer solutions that meet the demands of a changing world.

“We are very proud to enter into this long-term agreement with Gränges, a global aluminum company at the cutting edge of sustainability and decarbonization efforts in the industry," Scepter CEO Garney Scott says. "It will allow us to expand on our vision, leverage our resources and deliver the highest-quality low-carbon ingots. We look forward to future growth with Gränges in the U.S.”
