GFL Environmental Inc. officially has started up its newly rebuilt material recovery facility (MRF) in Edmonton, Alberta, marking the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony March 31.
GFL, based in Vaughan, Ontario, says that with the new MRF’s advanced sorting and processing technology, the facility will optimize recycling efficiency and increase the volume of material processed.
“We’re excited for the opportunities the opening of this facility creates to support and extend Alberta’s recycling efforts,” says Ashley Marr, regional vice president of Alberta and Northern British Columbia at GFL.

The MRF’s system was installed by Norwalk, Connecticut-based Van Dyk Recycling Solutions and is equipped with optical sorters, a “high-production” Bollegraaf baler to produce what GFL says is “top-quality materials” for resale in markets across North America and an automated bag breaker suited for Edmonton’s blue bag program.
The facility also is equipped with a Fire Rover fire suppression system to mitigate fire risks.
“By improving operational efficiency and supporting the circular economy, the facility reduces waste, enables material reuse and promotes sustainable production practices,” GFL says this week in a news release announcing the opening.
“The facility will play a key role in supporting businesses and residents in their recycling efforts. It is expected to divert thousands of [tons] of recyclable materials annually, reducing landfill waste and maximizing resource recovery.”
