FCC Environment UK, the British subsidiary of Madrid-based FCC Servicios Medio Ambiente, says the Kent County Council in England in the United Kingdom has awarded it a contract for the management and operation of 12 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). The order, FCC says, “represents a backlog of 40 million pounds ($52.2 million) for a term of five years.”

The contract for the management and operation of the 12 HWRCs “also includes the haulage from the HWRC [and] the operation of three transfer stations,” according to FCC. The contract went into effect Nov. 1 and will run for an initial five-year term with a possible five-year extension.

“FCC Environment [holds] over 100 contracts with some 60 local authorities up and down the country, operating some 100 HWRCs, so we consider ourselves to be a safe pair of hands,” says Steve Longdon, operations director of the company.

He adds, “As we move towards a green recovery which will see major changes to the way we recycle, not just in England but in the whole of the U.K., it’s good to be enhancing our relationship with Kent County Council to continue to improve recycling rates and make an environmental contribution by doing the right thing.”

FCC Environment says it will bring “a range of benefits” to the contract, including what it calls a dedicated fleet and an experienced management team, “with extensive knowledge and understanding of operating both haulage and HWRC operations.”

According to the Kent County Council website, its HWRCs accept materials including municipal solid waste (MSW), scrap tires, home remodeling scrap, obsolete appliances, discarded furniture and yard trimmings.

FCC Servicios Medio Ambiente says it serves nearly 60 million people in 12 countries. The company operates in several European nations and has a growing presence in the United States.
