EMR opens New Jersey port facility

The EMR USA business unit of United Kingdom-based EMR Ltd. has opened a new scrap metal processing and export facility  at Duraport Marine Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey.

The company says its investment at the terminal will increase EMR USA’s use of sea freight and rail, “delivering sustainable materials to customers across the United States and in key global markets such as Turkey.”

The Bayonne site replaces an existing New Jersey terminal in Newark, and EMR says it provides efficiencies in material handling and movement that “will support EMR in its journey to net-zero” by 2040.

Officially opening April 17, EMR says the Duraport facility has been “developed with sustainability at the forefront.” The company lists all-concrete flooring and an “innovative dust-suppression system” as features that will help “ensure potentially hazardous materials cannot leak into the local environment. “

The waterfront facility also will use electric-powered equipment, including material handlers, “removing the use of fossil fuels wherever possible.” 

EMR also describes sea freight as a low-carbon transport option for moving material to steel mills, both within the U.S. and abroad. The Duraport site also includes a rail interlink, which EMR says can offer “significant carbon savings and increased efficiency compared to road transport.” 

Fire safety equipment (including an advanced camera system) will, meanwhile, ensure the safety of EMR USA’s customers, employees, and the local community at all times.
