Swedish appliance manufacturer Electrolux Group has announced what it calls an ambitious new recycled materials target designed to increase to 35 percent the share of recycled steel and plastic by weight it uses to make its products.
The company intends to reach that goal by 2030 and, if so, says it will nearly double the weight of recycled materials it would use compared with a previous target.
“As a sustainability leader, we will continue to push ourselves and the industry to adopt even bolder sustainability commitments,” says Elena Breda, chief technology and sustainability officer at Electrolux. “I am very proud that we have set this target as an industry first,” says Breda, adding, “It will help us drive our company’s circularity agenda through the increased use of recycled steel and plastics in our products.”
The new target expands the focus to include Elecrolux's two most highly used materials by weight in the form of steel and plastic.
“Adding steel to the target increases the material in scope to more than 40 percent of all material purchased by the group, around three times what was in the scope of the previous target,” the firm says.
In North America, Electrolux makes and markets appliances under the Frigidaire and Electrolux brand names. The company employs about 9,400 people in North America, with its regional headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, and production facilities in: Kinston, North Carolina; Anderson, South Carolina; Springfield, Tennessee; and Juárez, Mexico.
The company made the announcement in coordination with the release of its 2024 sustainability statement, which can be found on its website.
