EcoNiLi Battery Europe S.L., a subsidiary of CarbonX Global Group, with headquarters in South Korea and Malaysia, says it expects to begin operations in Alicente, Spain, in June of next year.
EcoNiLi Battery Inc., which is headquartered in Singapore, was founded by CEO Jayden Goh. The company says it currently serves Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Singapore. Including CarbonX and EcoNiLi Battery, the companies have more than 60 employees currently, with that number expected the rise in 2023.
EcoNiLi’s Phase 1 location in Spain will cover 66,000 square meters, or more than 710,000 square feet. The site will have an annual capacity of 45,000 metric tons and will include a research and development lab with quality control technologies, the company says.
The Spain location also will have 1,000 square meters, or more than 10,700 square feet, of office space.
The location offers 26 high-security storage containers, which are shipping containers that are placed in a secured area and equipped with advanced smoke, fire and heat detectors that activate automatic extinguishers designed especially for lithium-ion batteries, a spokesperson for the company says. These sensors are connected to a central alarm to alert facility personnel of a fire risk.
The company’s location in Spain will feature 1,600 solar panels to produce 833 kilowatt hours of electricity, reducing its carbon footprint.
EcoNiLi says the site will adhere to Spanish regulatory standards for battery reuse.
