Ecobat helping repair shops replace 12V Tesla batteries

The battery recycler says the 12-volt batteries in pre-2022 Tesla models represent an “overlooked profit opportunity” for independent repair shops that otherwise could direct customers back to the automaker’s service centers.

According to Dallas-based battery recycler Ecobat, independent automotive repair shops could be discovering what it claims is an “often overlooked profit opportunity” as electric vehicles (EVs) produced by Tesla dominate the market—replacing the 12-volt batteries found in pre-2022 Tesla models.

“While Tesla’s high-voltage lithium-ion powertrains steal the spotlight, their low-voltage 12-volt batteries remain critical for powering essential functions, such as lighting, touchscreen displays and security systems,” Ecobat says, adding that these batteries degrade over time, lasting approximately three to four years, to create a recurring replacement need that many Tesla owners may not anticipate.

Rather than directing customers back to Tesla service centers, Ecobat says independent repair shops can offer reliable replacement options with the recycler’s extensive inventory of OE-fitment B24, B19 and U1 AGM batteries. Ecobat says workshops can leverage its industry expertise to provide Tesla owners with cost-effective battery solutions while tapping into the rapidly expanding EV service market.

Ecobat notes that Tesla’s pre-2022 models, including the Model 3 and Model X, use traditional lead-acid 12V batteries (B24 and B19 types), while the Model S features a U1-type AGM (absorbent glass mat) battery. The batteries power essential low-voltage vehicle functions that include lighting systems, climate control and heating, touchscreen and dashboard electronics, door locks and security systems and onboard computers.

With extreme temperatures, frequent short trips and charging habits all impacting battery longevity, Ecobat says Tesla owners increasingly will seek replacements, providing independent repair shops with a recurring revenue stream.

Ecobat claims that by sourcing its 12V batteries, service providers gain access to high-quality OE-fitment batteries for Tesla Model 3, Model X and Model S vehicles, reliable inventory availability to meet increasing aftermarket demand as well as support for safe and compliant EV battery servicing.

Additionally, Ecobat says it is committed to advancing the circular economy by ensuring that end-of-life batteries are responsibly collected, processed and repurposed. The company produces lead and lead alloys from recycled sources at 19 facilities and 11 smelters manned by 2,700 employees.

“Through sustainable recycling solutions, Ecobat helps keep valuable materials in the supply chain, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact,” the company says. “By choosing Ecobat, repair shops not only profit from Tesla battery replacements but also contribute to a more sustainable future for the EV industry.”
