E-Stewards, a leading electronics recycling certification program headquartered in Seattle, has announced a strategic partnership with London-based Bloom ESG to introduce an environmental benefits calculator that provides electronics recyclers and refurbishers with a scientifically validated method to measure environmental benefits, starting with avoided carbon emissions, which they say is one of the most critical yet challenging metrics.

The  ISO-approved, independently verified methodology has been endorsed by e-Stewards as part of its commitment to fostering transparent, nongreenwashed environmental reporting, saying the electronics recycling sector has lacked a standardized, verifiable way to measure Scopes 1-3 emissions as well as Scope 4, the carbon avoidance achieved through reuse and recycling. While demand for reliable ESG, or environmental, social and corporate governance, reporting has increased, according to the organization, e-scrap processors have had to rely on nonspecialized tools without an industry-approved methodology.

Future versions of the co-branded Bloom + e-Stewards ITAD Environmental Benefits Calculator will be expanded to include additional environmental metrics, such as water usage, toxic material consumption and overall toxicity footprint, the partners say.

Until now, our industry has understood the positive environmental benefit of ethical circularity, but quantifying these benefits has been a challenge,” says Daniel Puckett, e-Stewards business director. “We are excited to launch this ESG-focused partnership with Bloom and introduce a tool that sets a new standard for environmental benefit measurement.”

Sebastian Foot, CEO of Bloom ESG, says: “We are delighted to partner with e-Stewards, an organization known for its integrity and leadership in electronics recycling and reuse. Their endorsement and adoption of our platform will help bring best-practice impact reporting to a highly engaged audience of industry leaders.”

The Bloom + e-Stewards ITAD Environmental Benefits Calculator was developed with input from leading e-scrap processors and validated by a globally recognized audit firm. Its independently verified, ISO-approved methodology offers customers insight into the environmental benefits of circularity in electronics recycling, e-Stewards and Bloom say.

Large corporations rely on our reporting to quantify the benefits of responsible recycling and refurbishment,” says Bob Houghton, CEO of Sage Sustainable Electronics, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. “E-Stewards endorsement of Bloom ESG methodology validates the environmental impact that is so important to our customers.”

CXtec is very excited to be one of the first adopters of the Bloom + e-Stewards calculator,” Todd Zegers CEO of the Syracuse, New York-based information technology and asset disposition (ITAD) and secondary hardware marketing firm,  says. “Finally, our industry will have the missing link to individually show our worth to our customers and the world in terms of avoided emissions—the elusive Scope 4. We are in with both feet!”

“Dynamic is proud to have partnered with Bloom in pioneering this transformative Scope 4 avoided-emissions calculator,” says Curt Greeno, president of  ITAD services provider Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations of Wisconsin. “For nearly two years, our customers have leveraged this innovation to achieve their sustainability goals, and it’s exciting to see the methodology now gaining broader recognition through e-Stewards’ endorsement.”

The Bloom + e-Stewards calculator will be available to all electronics recyclers and refurbishers, including non-e-Stewards-certified companies, at a discounted rate for the first 10 early adopters.
