The Aluminum Association, the Can Manufacturers Institute and Keep America Beautiful Inc. (KAB) have announced that the Curbside Value Partnership (CVP) has become an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Steve Thompson, long-time director of the CVP, has been named executive director. The board of directors is comprised of representatives from Novelis, Alcoa, ARCO Aluminum Inc., Ball Corp., Coca-Cola Recycling and KAB.
“Forming an independent organization allows CVP to expand its reach, incorporate additional partners committed to increasing recycling rates and explore new business models,” says Thompson. “Keep America Beautiful will continue to be a valuable partner, and together we look forward to helping even more communities be effective in their curbside recycling efforts.”
“CVP’s primary focus of increasing curbside recycling participation and collection through education and measurement-driven decision making will continue,” says David Gill, CVP board chair and manager of business planning for Novelis Corp. “CVP has an outstanding reputation and track record, and this next phase of program growth is going to be very exciting.”
CVP was originally established in 2003 by the Aluminum Association and the Can Manufacturers Institute to grow and sustain participation and collection in residential curbside recycling programs through education and measurement. In 2009, CVP joined forces with KAB.
“Increasing the efficiency and productivity of curbside recycling is vital to raising recovery rates of all materials,” says Matt McKenna, president and CEO for KAB. “We look forward to a continued partnership with CVP as part of our overall agenda to increase recycling access, awareness and infrastructure in America. Additionally, I’m thrilled to have a role on the board of directors for the new organization.”
In a release, CVP notes that it is currently the only national program that engages all recycling stakeholders to identify solutions to improving curbside recycling and is recognized as a leading voice in the recycling arena. Since starting, CVP has partnered with 27 communities and four states. CVP partner communities report a 23 percent average increase in recycling volume and an 18 percent average increase in participation.
