Irving, Texas-based Commercial Metals Co. (CMC) has acquired all the assets of metal recycling company Roane Metals Group LLC of eastern Tennessee.

According to CMC, the two Roane facilities in Rockwood and Crossville, Tennessee, are capable of processing approximately 85,000 tons of ferrous and nonferrous materials annually.

CMC is in the process of building a 500,000 tons-per-year scrap-fed electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mill in West Virginia and has a mill in Knoxville, Tennessee, and another in South Carolina. The company indicates the new Tennessee locations are positioned to help supply its own steel mills.

“The majority of volumes relate to obsolete ferrous scrap grades consumed by CMC’s long product mills,” the company says regarding the Roane acquisition. “The acquired assets are expected to enhance the security and supply of competitively priced inputs to CMC’s steelmaking operations.”

The 2022 Recycling Today list of the largest ferrous scrap processors in North America shows CMC at that time handling more than 2.8 million tons of ferrous scrap annually from 38 locations.
