Inditex Group, the parent company of Zara and six other fashion brands, has joined the Pack4Good campaign organized by Canada-based not-for-profit group Canopy Planet Society.

Pack4Good is an effort through which partner companies focus on sustainable alternatives to logging ancient and endangered forests, including by using recycled pulp and paper, next-generations solutions and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.

Inditex, according to Canopy, has engaged in its own decadelong "Canopy-style" commitment to eliminate the use of ancient and endangered forests in its textiles, and says the company now has expanded "to ensure these vital forests are not ending up in their paper packaging.”

“It’s exciting to have Inditex bring the same leadership to reducing their paper packaging footprint as they have for the last decade to eliminate vital forests from their textiles,” Canopy Executive Director Nicole Rycroft says.

“A company of their significance sends a signal to paper packaging suppliers that it’s time to give forests a break and to invest in and scale lower impact alternatives."

In addition to Zara, Inditex Group owns the Berksha, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Stradivarius, Oysho and Zara Home retail brands.

“Inditex has worked hard to keep endangered forests out of our textile supply chain,” says Javier Losada, chief sustainability officer of Spain-based Inditex. “Now we will extend that work to our packaging, where we have already taken steps towards reduction, reuse and increase of recycled content.”

Canopy says that Inditex , as a Pack4Good partner, will continue building on existing initiatives to reduce the amount of packaging it uses, including employing reusable boxes for intra-business use, increasing recycled paper content, and incorporating innovative Next Generation fibers into their paper packaging.

The addition of Inditex brings the Pack4Good initiative to 449 brands, with combined annual sales of more than $285 billion, according to Canopy.
