The Maricopa County (Ariz.) Board of Supervisors approved a 10-year contract with Crumb Rubber Manufacturers of Compton, Calif., last week. The company's ground-up tires have been used by Phoenix and the Arizona Department of Transportation for rubberized asphalt. The contract is for $25 million.
Maricopa County includes Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, and Mesa.
The contract includes an agreement for the recycling, removal and final disposal of waste tires from County designated collection sites. The contract is fully funded by the State of Arizona with no cost to Maricopa County.
The county's current company, Polytek Rubber and Recycling, doesn't have the capacity to process the tires it had agreed to shred and recycle, leading to a pileup of nearly 3 million tires at the company's plant in Mesa.
