Styrene producer Americas Styrenics LLC (AmSty), The Woodlands, Texas, has announced the first sales of its PolyRenew certified recycled styrene product were recorded in 2024.

PolyRenew is AmSty’s trademarked styrene and polystyrene (PS) products that are certified to be produced from recycled or sustainable raw materials.

“We’re proud to be a pioneer in providing sustainable product solutions and are excited to see momentum building with customers for PolyRenew in both styrene and polystyrene markets,” AmSty President and CEO Randy Pogue says, adding that the company consistently has delivered shipments of PolyRenew recycled PS to customers and converters since 2023.

“In 2024, we successfully added our first shipments of PolyRenew Styrene to our sales portfolio,” Pogue continues. “Our customers are increasingly setting ambitious sustainability goals and AmSty will play an important role in achieving their success.”

The company says it can source several different types of feedstocks for its products. It uses an ISCC Plus-verified mass balance approach, enabling the sustainable characteristics of those feedstocks to be assigned to specific shipments to AmSty customers using a credit-based system.

For example, AmSty says an ISCC Plus-certified company that purchases the PolyRenew styrene monomer for the production of rubber destined for tires can represent that the tires are made with a percentage of recycled styrene on a mass balance basis that is third-party validated.

“AmSty is a large merchant buyer of both ethylene and benzene with a diversified domestic and global supply network,” says John Medico, AmSty’s vice president of feedstocks, styrene and supply chain. “We have access to multiple sources and different types of circular and sustainable feedstocks to generate our PolyRenew certified styrene that meets the particular requirements of our customers.”

AmSty claims it was the first U.S. company to partner with ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) to apply the organization’s third-party certification system to recycled plastics in the country. Today, AmSty says all of its plants are ISCC Plus certified.

“Customer acceptance of the mass balance approach is an important and significant step that allows for the leveraging of existing assets and infrastructure to deliver the most cost-effective products with origins that are verifiable as fully circular and sustainable,” Medico says.
