NEW WEB SITE FOR SCRAP FOAM

Adding to the niche marketing opportunities the Internet offers, a new site has been introduced focusing on scrap foam. Scrapfoam.com, New York, claims it is the first online scrap foam marketplace for this commodity.

Scrapfoam.com also is the home for scrap foam buyers to see the types of foam available on the market and allows them to browse or bid on the item.

The goal of the site is to make buying and selling scrap foam more efficient. The company’s president, Stuart Lieblein, says scrapfoam.com “is the fairest and most efficient tool for buyers and sellers of scrap foam.”

THE DOCK OFFERS EQUIPMENT

TheDock.com, Los Angeles, an online marketplace for equipment and value-added services, launched in December. The site, the company says, is designed to integrate the fragmented, non-commodity market for industrial equipment. The site encourages communication and supports both the sales of new and used equipment. The site had 4,000 advance members and more than 85,000 pieces of equipment listed at its launch.

THOMAS REGISTER AVAILABLE ON YAHOO!

ThomasRegister.com now has its online databases available on Yahoo! B2B Marketplace and Yahoo! Electronic Marketplace at B2B.yahoo.com and industrymarketplaces.yahoo.com. The Yahoo! edition gives users access to more than 68,000 product and service headings and allows targeted searches of the Thomas Register databases.

Ruth Hurd, publisher of Thomas Register, says, “The agreement with Yahoo! will help us offer content in as many places as possible where our target audience may gather.”

Yahoo! also says the agreement helps add to the content already offered at the site. “This relationship supports our strategy to provide users of Yahoo! B2B marketplace and Yahoo! Industry Marketplaces with the best content and services available to meet their research and purchasing needs,” says Shannon Ledger, vice president and general manager, production, Yahoo!

METALSMART LAUNCHES SITE

Metal Smart Inc., New York, has launched an online marketplace for buying and selling ferro-alloys, noble alloys and minor metals. Site users can participate in negotiations, auctions and can post offers to buy and sell materials. The venture is headed by former Birmingham Steel Corp., Birmingham, CEO Robert Garvey.

FORESTEXPRESS LICENSES MOAI SOFTWARE

ForestExpress has licensed Live Exchange™ online negotiation software from Moai Technologies Inc., San Francisco, for its Web site. The software will allow users to negotiate availability, payment terms, price and other functions and to integrate business transactions with the functionality of the site.

“We will utilize Moai Technologies’ LiveExchange product to offer the versatility and user-friendly capability our customers expect for structured negotiations,” says Bob Renner, chief technology officer of ForestExpress, Atlanta.

RECYCLENET ACQUIRES FIBERGLASS.COM

RecycleNet Corp., Guelph, Ontario, has acquired fiberglass.com Inc., operators of Fiberglass World and House of Glass, Web sites for the glass and fiberglass industries. The company says the acquisition reinforces the company’s “strategic position to pursue its aggressive plans of merger, acquisition, strategic alliance, joint ventures and rapid organic growth.”

SUCCESS FOUND AT SCRAPFINDER.COM

Scrapfinder.com is a scrap trading Internet site claiming success, completing about $10 million in sales since its launch. The U.K.-based company expects sales to increase in 2001 “as the Scrapfinder brand develops more.” The site will undergo further development this year to offer more service to customers.

SCRAPSITE LAUNCHES NEW SERVICE

ScrapSite.net, Pittsburgh, has introduced Negotiated Buys/RFQ, a negotiation service the company says will help customers make purchases faster. The Negotiated Buys service allows scrap buyers to request material based on product specifications and send the request to multiple sellers.

Other features the service offers are repeat request options that let buyers save negotiation attributes for repeat purchases and the ability to instantly review the status of all proposals.

“Our unique Negotiated Buys functionality will greatly benefit buyers of both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal,” says Ralph Pinkert, president of ScrapSite. “It was developed with the needs of buyers in mind and provides them with a powerful purchasing tool.”

PALO ALTO INTRODUCES ‘RECYCLOPEDIA’

Palo Alto, Calif., has introduced a Web site to match goods with new owners. The “Recyclopedia” lists more than 60 categories to choose from of materials that can be recycled or reused, ranging from computers to musical instruments. The city government collects listing information.
