Scrap metal processing company Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, based in Owego, New York, has been recognized by Platts, a leading independent provider of information and benchmark prices for the commodities and energy markets.
The company received the Industry Leadership Award in the Scrap & Recycling category.
Adam Weitsman, owner of Upstate Shredding, says he believes the award is a great honor and a testament to his company's commitment to exceptional operations and dynamic growth strategies. Weitsman was on hand to accept the award at the ceremony Thursday, May 19, in London.
“This recognition is one of the top moments of my career,” he said. “To have been selected as the winner when international judges are reviewing companies, public and private, from all over the world is an astonishing accomplishment.”
He continued, “Thank you to all my employees and their families for their support this year on helping Upstate Shredding get this award for Global Scrap Company of the Year. I'm humbled that we can bring this award home to the USA where it belongs. I'm stunned that we won this and I am going to bring the award home and give to my daughter, Clover, who has watched her dad stay up all night long every night of the week, thinking how to navigate the disaster for our industry that 2015 was. This night is the highlight of my career for sure.”
Nominees were considered from across the globe. Judges selecting the finalists and the winner for each of the categories carefully the finalists' achievements, financial results, leadership, integrity, job growth and operational excellence before announcing which companies are considered to be the industry leaders.
“By making sound decisions and by assembling some of the hardest working people in the scrap industry, we’ve had an amazing period of growth,” Weitsman said. “Our success will continue for many years to come, and being named the winner of this prestigious award is recognition of that effort.”
Upstate Shredding won the Platts award for Global Scrap Company of the Year in 2014 and was honored as Scrap Company of the Year (large company) by American Metal Market in 2015.
Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling has grown to 18 locations, including yards in the New York cities of Owego (two locations), Binghamton, Ithaca (two locations), Syracuse, Watertown, Albany, Allegany, Hornell, Jamestown, Rochester and Brant, as well as in Scranton and New Castle, Pennsylvania. The company says it expects to process more than 1 million tons of ferrous and 300 million pounds of nonferrous this year as it continues towards its goal of $1 billion in annual sales.
