More auto shredders in the U.S. means more competition for hulks, as well as shredding of other items such as appliances.
After seven years and a lot of demand from our readers, Recycling Today has updated our comprehensive list of auto shredding installations in the United States. Through the course of our research, we find that there are 31 more heavy-duty shredders in the U.S. than there were in 1988, bringing the total number from 180 to 211. States which have gained auto shredding capability are Alaska, Hawaii and West Virginia. However, Delaware, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming are still without auto shredders.
Because of increased shredding capability and a flat supply of auto hulks, processors report they are shredding other large metal items, such as appliances, to keep their shredders going. Although profits are being made, popular sentiment is that "they aren’t what they used to be."
The world population of shredders also increased to 651 from 589 in 1988, with shredders being added in Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Poland, South Africa, Sweden and Venezuela.
