SMS names new president

Illinois-based scrap company promotes Kevin Crary to president and adds Jeremy Kirchin as new head of mill services division.

Scrap Metal Services LLC (SMS), based in Burnham, Illinois, has promoted its former President of Mill Services Kevin Crary to a president of the overall company.

“Kevin has already proven to be a valued member of our management group and this new role will allow him to focus more on the big picture to help sustain the ongoing viability of the business,” says SMS CEO Jeffry Gertler.

In his new position, Crary will maintain management oversight over all of SMS’ national and international operations. As a former procurement manager for ArcelorMittal and having worked in various roles with SMS since 2012, Crary is “well-suited for this new challenge,” says Gertler.

Replacing Crary as president of the mill services division is Jeremy Kirchin. Before joining SMS, Kirchin worked for about 15 years in positions of increasing responsibility at Harsco Corpor. and its predecessor Mutliserv.

His experience includes roles in continuous process improvement, revenue growth, purchasing (including supply chain) and launching new programs and initiatives, according to SMS. Kirchin formerly lived, obtained his degree and worked in the United Kingdom.

“Jeremy is a natural fit for the Mill Services president role,” says Gertler. “We are delighted to bring him aboard and know he will hit the ground running as an integral part of our management team. We are also pleased that Kevin has assumed the new role as SMS’s president. In light of the continuing growth of the company, there is an ongoing need to synergize our multifaceted operations.”

SMS and its various subsidiaries and affiliates operate scrap processing, steel mill services, ship dismantling and recycling, intermodal/truck/railcar and dismantling facilities in the United States and Mexico. The company has more than 15 operations in the U.S. and four operations in Mexico. Its mill services division performs on-site mill services at locations for several customers, including ArcelorMittal in Burns Harbor, Indiana and Coatesville, Pennsylvania; AK Steel in Dearborn, Michigan; JSW Steel in Baytown, Texas; and FRISA in Monterrey, Mexico.
