Scrap Metal Services LLC (SMS), Burnham, Ill., has increased its processing capacity by purchasing the assets of the Behr Iron and Steel Inc. Port of Indiana processing facility in Portage, Ind.
“The Behr Port of Indiana Facility location represents a strategic fit to our northwest Indiana volume growth,” says Jeffry Gertler, CEO of SMS.
The acquisition was completed Dec. 31, 2010, and is designed to complement and add processing capabilities to current SMS facilities within the northwest Indiana and Chicago regions, says Gertler.
In 2010, SMS also opened up a commercial operation in Malcolm, Ala., adjacent to the new ThyssenKrupp mill in Calvert, Ala.
Richard Gertler, COO of SMS, says, “These added Indiana and Alabama processing operations will allow SMS the opportunity to expand our service capabilities to our customers and consumers in a much larger and broader geographic area.”
SMS now operates four processing facilities and two steel mill services operations. The company offers scrap processing, scrap management and consulting, scrap brokerage, mill service, intermodal/railcar decommissioning and dismantling services and supplies of ferrous and nonferrous scrap to domestic and international consumers.
