Canada Fibers Opens Expanded Toronto MRF
Canada Fibers has opened its expanded Toronto material recovery facility (MRF), equipped with a system supplied by Van Dyk Recycling Solutions, Stamford, Conn. According to Van Dyk, the single-stream MRF has a rated processing capacity of 350,000 tons per year and a projected commodity recovery rate of 95 percent.

Described as one of the largest single-stream facilities in North America, the MRF houses double input lines, bag breaking technology and StarScreen screens.

Specialized sorting equipment includes 10 Titech optical sorting units, 22 vacuum hoods to remove film present in Toronto’s material, a Lubo PaperMagnet, two PaperSpikes to sort old corrugated containers (OCC) and boxboard and glass-breaker screens.

The official opening was June 26, 2013, during which Environment Minister of Ontario Jim Bradley delivered a speech preceding the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The facility’s throughput has been measured to be as high as 90 tons per hour, with Titech recovery units at the end of the system.

A Bollegraaf HBC 140F baler bales paper grades, while aBollegraaf HBC 120 compacts containers into homogenous bales.

Van Dyk says it helped Canada Fibers install the machinery into a new 140,000-square-foot building insulated with fiber from Canada Fibers’ own recycling operation.

American Pulverizer Reports Rotor Success
American Pulverizer Co., St. Louis, says shredding plant owners are reporting positive results with, and showing steady interest in, its line of shredder rotors.

The company offers a line of disc rotors for 72-, 74-, 80-, 98- and 120-inch diameter shredders.

The disc rotors, which can be furnished with custom designed cast steel pillow blocks, are made with hard-faced discs and replaceable end disc caps.

In the field, American Pulverizer says one of its customers, a large-volume scrap company with multiple locations, has been able to use an American Pulverizer 98-inch rotor to process more than 485,000 tons before the unit needed to be remanufactured or replaced.

According to American Pulverizer, its rotors:

• Use patented square-to-round shafts that do not require keyways and result in longer life;
• Are statically balanced and dynamically tested; and
• Use discs tightly fitted to OEM interference fit specs.

Terex Appoints Luby Equipment as Distributor
Terex Construction Americas, Southaven, Miss., has signed Luby Equipment Services (www.lubyequipment.com), Fenton, Mo., to distribute the Terex Fuchs material handler line to customers in central and southern Illinois, eastern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Luby Equipment now provides full sales, service and parts support for the Terex Fuchs material handler line, which includes models purpose-built for the scrap, recycling, portside and logging industries with 41,888- to 147,710-pound operating weights and working radii from 27 to 72 feet.

“An integral part of the heavy-equipment market in this territory for more than 35 years, Luby Equipment has earned a solid reputation for delivering superior service support,” says Chris Koch, Terex Construction Americas sales manager for Terex Fuchs material handlers.

“The company has a long history with both scrap and portside applications and has a specialist dedicated solely to Terex Fuchs equipment sales.”

The Terex Fuchs material handler line is designed to handle the extreme operating conditions of scrap and recycling applications. Standard models include wheel- and track-driven undercarriage designs, powered by turbocharged diesel engines meeting current emissions standards. Alternatively, the models can be powered by zero-emissions electric motors in either semimobile or stationary designs. Modular upper and lower carriage construction allows the machines to be configured to meet customer needs, the company says.

Ted Rose, Luby Equipment vice president of sales, says, “The scrap and portside businesses are key in our territory, and, until now, we modified equipment to meet customer demand for material handling. Machinex Lands Contract in Newfoundland
Machinex, Plessisville, Quebec, has landed a contract with Central Newfoundland Waste Management (CNWM), the waste authority that provides services throughout the province, to supply the equipment for a new material recovery facility (MRF) in Newfoundland, Canada. The facility will be located at the current landfill site in central Newfoundland. When operational it will be able to process up to 12 metric tons per hour of residential and commercial waste, according to Machinex.

The company says the system offers a balance between manual labor and automated sorting equipment, such as a bag opener, a trommel, a ballistic separator, an optical sorting unit, a ferrous magnet and an eddy current separator. The operational flexibility of the plant will allow processing of a wide composition of material while focusing on the recovery of recyclables, such as paper, old corrugated containers (OCC), ferrous and nonferrous metals, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic bottles, mixed plastics, wood, film and textiles.

The facility also will install elevated tour platforms to provide the public with the opportunity to view the plant in operation.

Installation of the facility is slated to begin June 2014 with startup of the plant expected in October 2014, according to Machinex.

Krause Manufacturing Celebrates 50 Years of Business
Krause Manufacturing, Bellingham, Wash., celebrates its 50th year of business this year. Krause manufactures heavy-duty recycling systems for construction and demolition (C&D), municipal solid waste, single-stream material and electronic scrap as well as front-end system solutions for waste conversion technologies.

“As a longtime Krause employee of 24 years,” says Sales Engineer Jay Edmonds. “I’m proud to say that after 50 years, Krause is still operating under the same principles that the company was founded on. We keep the customer’s needs in the forefront, operating with integrity and providing the best value for the dollar.”

Krause built its reputation first as a manufacturer of custom agricultural equipment. The company began serving the recycling industry in 1985 and entered the C&D market in the mid- 1990s. “Company founder Herb Krause’s philosophy was if you could build a machine that a farmer couldn’t tear apart, you did well,” says Edmonds.

Mike Whitney, vice president and general manager, says, “The company’s history in farming equipment made the transition to manufacturing recycling equipment smooth. The industry demands strong standards of its equipment, and Krause was there to answer the need. Over 25 years later, much of the equipment produced is still up and running.”

Krause joined the CP Group in 2004, expanding its experience in equipment design and engineering by drawing on the experience and ability of CP, which has provided separation technology for the recycling industry since 1977.

US Shredder and Castings Group Opens Inventory Facility
The U.S. Shredder and Castings Group, based in Trussville, Ala., has opened a new castings inventory facility at its Mackinaw, Ill., location. The company says the site will stock hammers, caps and other higher volume shredder castings and will be able to supply partial or complete loads of these parts for immediate delivery.

U.S. Shredder says the facility will inventory shredder parts that do not justify the ordering of complete container loads, particularly 6085 models. The service is designed for companies with multiple shredders and individual owners. A Southeast U.S. castings inventory facility also is being planned, the company says.
