Aluminum Association Names Vice President of Public Affairs
The Aluminum Association has hired Joe Quinn as its new vice president of public affairs effective July 15. Quinn’s responsibilities include overseeing the association’s policy communications, advocacy strategies and media relations.

Prior to joining the Aluminum Association, Quinn served as vice president of the public relations firm Edelman, where he led public affairs and corporate reputation programs for Walmart, Toyota and the American Petroleum Institute, among others.

“Joe has a breadth of knowledge in communications and strategic public affairs as well as experience inside Washington, and I’m glad to have him on board at the association,” says Pat Franc, Aluminum Association chairman and president of Tri-Arrows Aluminum.

“I’m pleased that a committee of member companies participated in Joe’s selection and am very happy with where this process ended up,” Franc continues.

Heidi Brock, president of the Aluminum Association, adds, “Joe has a lot of experience positioning organizations favorably with policymakers using a multidiscipline approach, and I look forward to working with him to advance our member’s priorities in Washington, D.C. US Shredder Hires Southeast US Project Manager
The U.S. Shredder and Castings Group, Trussville, Ala., has hired Ryan Bass as a project manager for the U.S. Southeast.

Bass previously served as a sales representative for Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Vulcan Materials Co. In his new position, Bass, who will be based in Nashville, Tenn., will join other field project managers in supporting the company’s casting and equipment sales as well as installation support on shredder and downstream projects.

“Ryan’s experience with ‘in the field, hands on’ style customer service and sales is a great fit for the philosophy of U.S. Shredder,” says Bill Tigner, company president. “Our project managers work side by side with our customers to sustain the most profitable shredding systems with the least amount of downtime.”

New President/COO to Head ARCA Recycling
Appliance Recycling Centers of America Inc. (ARCA), Minneapolis, which provides retailing and recycling services for appliances, has appointed Mark Eisenschenk to the position of chief operating officer and president of ARCA Recycling Inc. In his role, Eisenschenk will be responsible for setting the strategic direction and driving performance in the day-to-day operations of ARCA Recycling and its subsidiaries.

Edward Cameron, ARCA president and CEO, says, “Mark brings extensive operational and financial knowledge to ARCA that will help us sharpen our focus in delivering long-term value to our stakeholders.”

MPE Adds to Staff
Material Process Equipment Inc. (MPE), a Highland, Mich.-based manufacturer of magnetic separation equipment, has appointed Terry Woolford business development manager. Woolford will be responsible for driving sales of the company’s electrical inspection systems, including its Cassel metal detectors and X-ray equipment and checkweighers.

Woolford has more than 20 years of experience in the metal detection and X-ray inspection industries. In his new role, he will be responsible for increasing sales, developing market strategy and fostering strategic “best-in-class” partnerships and customer relationships for all of MPE’s electronic inspection products and services, the company says.

MPE President Keith Rhodes says, “Terry’s extensive industry knowledge complements our established relationships with our customer base and will play a fundamental role in driving our growth as well as providing vision, direction and strong leadership in sales.”

Association of Ohio Recyclers Names New Executive Director
The Association of Ohio Recyclers (AOR), Columbus, Ohio, has appointed Arley Owens its new executive director.

“Arley’s knowledge of recycling and waste management issues and initiatives, prior employment experience and his network of professionals in the recycling and waste management industry will help AOR achieve its goals,” says Mike Ryan, president of the AOR.

Previously, Owens was employed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Parks & Recreation as the special programs group manager and supervised the agency’s grants program, the naturalist program, go green camping, corporate sponsorship, college recruitment, recycling and waste management and Ohio State Parks’ sustainability initiative.

“I am honored and excited to be the new executive director,” says Owens. “My first objective is to coordinate AOR’s annual conference, Oct. 28-29, 2013, at the Bridgewater Banquet & Conference Center in Powell, Ohio. I have also set three overarching goals to position AOR as Ohio’s premiere recycling organization: increase member benefits, diversify membership and establish AOR as a resource for information related to recycling, waste reduction and sustainability.”

PSI Names Scholarship Winners
Four young people related to employees of member firms of the Paper Stock Industries (PSI) chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI) will receive $1,500 scholarships from PSI.

The 2013 scholarship recipients are Kelsey Boman, daughter of Bill and Renee Boman, who is a customer service rep at Marathon Equipment; Veronica Chapp, daughter of Mary Wood, a revenue accountant at Pioneer Paper Stock; Caleb Powell, son of Dawn and Buford Powell, who is area manager for SP Recycling SE; and Erica Sun, daughter of Gloria Chu, who works in human resources at Tzeng Long USA.

In Memoriam: Ray Petermeyer
Ray Petermeyer, who was involved in the paper recycling industry for 65 years, died in mid-May at age 88.

Petermeyer started E-Z Recycling in Portland, Ore., in 1980, which merged with Far West Fibers, also of Portland, two years later. Petermeyer worked there until his retirement.

He was president of the Paper Stock Industries (PSI) chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) from 1998 to 2000 and also served on the PSI and ISRI boards.

Petermeyer is survived by his wife, Delores; brothers, Vernon and Robert; sons, Steve and John; daughters, Nancy Betschart, Pam Donaldson and Susan Brooks; and 28 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
