Republic Services appoints new COO
Waste management company Republic Services Inc., based in Phoenix, has named Robert Maruster executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Maruster will be responsible for Republic’s field operations, which include 170 business units encompassing 29,000 employees in 39 states and Puerto Rico; 336 collection operations; 199 transfer stations; 190 active landfill operations; and 64 recycling facilities. Additionally, Maruster will be responsible for the company’s safety and environmental compliance, operations support and fleet management. He will report to Don Slager, Republic’s president and CEO.

Maruster joins Republic from JetBlue Airways Corp., where he was executive vice president and COO.
Republic Services also has announced the election of entrepreneur Manuel “Manny” Kadre to its board of directors.
Kadre currently serves as chairman and CEO of MBB Auto LLC, a company that owns assets in the luxury automobile market. Additionally, since July 2009, Kadre has served as CEO of Gold Coast Caribbean Importers LLC, a company that imports well-known beverage products in markets throughout the Caribbean.
“We are very pleased that Manny has joined our board,” says Slager. “He brings extensive knowledge of running successful businesses that are focused on positioning well-known brands in highly regulated markets. We look forward to his contributions.”
CP Group names new director of project management
CP Group, a San Diego-based supplier of automated turnkey processing and sorting systems for dual- and single-stream material recovery facilities (MRFs), has named Luis Alarcon its director of project management.
Alarcon’s responsibilities will include directing CP’s project management and cross-departmental teams, working with customers to coordinate and execute project milestones.
CP says its project management team helps to oversee a customer’s project life span from the sales process through final commissioning and training.
“It’s a pleasure and privilege to join the CP Group at a time when the world is demanding innovative sustainability options and we’re answering the demand by offering a variety of industry-leading solutions,” says Alarcon.
ERI names new COO
Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), an electronics recycling firm headquartered in Fresno, California, has named Kelly Thomas its new chief operating officer. Thomas most recently served as senior vice president and general manager for Rolled Products North America at the aluminum company Aleris International Inc.
John Shegerian, chairman and CEO of ERI, says, “A seasoned, global business executive with roots in finance and a broad general management background focused in manufacturing, Kelly will be a fantastic asset to ERI as we continue to grow and expand revenue generation and market share.”
He adds, “Operations is such an important part of our business, it is critical that we expand our executive management team to prepare for our current growth opportunities, making Kelly an ideal fit.”
Thomas spent 15 years in the aluminum industry. Her tenure with Aleris also included roles as corporate treasurer and vice president of Metal Risk Management, with roles in Zurich and Cleveland.
Prior to joining Aleris, Thomas held various management positions with Alcoa for 10 years, including global oversight of Alcoa’s commodities risk management function and senior commercial leadership for Alcoa Europe’s primary products division as vice president of Alcoa Materials Management Europe.
During her career with Alcoa, Thomas gained global exposure to the company’s primary metals operations, working closely with staff in China, Brazil, Australia, Europe and Russia to drive better operational and commercial performance.
In related news, Tammy Shegerian, ERI’s former COO, has been appointed chief revenue officer of the company.
Rumpke names glass recycling manager
Rumpke Waste & Recycling, based in Cincinnati, has promoted Brad Cameron to the position of manager of its glass recycling plant in Dayton, Ohio.
Cameron has worked at Rumpke for 15 years, most recently serving as assistant manager of the company’s single-stream recycling plant in Dayton.
Rumpke’s glass recycling plant cleans and separates 20,000 tons of glass per year. The company has had a recycling facility in Dayton for more than 20 years.
Sims Metal Management seeks new CFO
Galdino Claro, group CEO and managing director of Sims Metal Management Ltd., has announced that the company has begun a global search for a new CFO. Rob Larry plans to leave the position Aug. 21.
The search will consider internal and external candidates to be based at Sims’ headquarters in New York City.
