IN MEMORIAM: Milton “Mickey” Solomon
Massachusetts scrap processor and trader Milton “Mickey” Solomon passed away in March at the age of 85. Solomon was a long-time executive at Solomon Metals Corp., a family scrap business based in Lynn, Mass., where his son Steven now serves as president and treasurer.

Mickey was born and raised in Chelsea, Mass., and began working full time at Solomon Metals Corp. upon graduation from Chelsea High School in 1945. He continued to serve as a company director until his death in 2012.

Throughout his career he served within industry trade groups as well as for regional nonprofit organizations, such as the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home, Camp Bauercrest in Amesbury, Mass., and Temple Tifereth Israel in Winthrop, Mass.

 

Mervis Industries Names Vice President, COO
The board of directors of Mervis Industries, Danville, Ill., has named Jim Picillo vice president and chief operating officer.

Picillo will oversee operations for all of the company’s divisions in three states and 18 locations. His responsibilities include ensuring that business operations are efficient and that business resources are managed properly.

 

ISRI Elects New Officers
The board of directors of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), Washington, D.C., has chosen Jerry Simms of Atlas Metals and Iron Corp., Denver, as its new chair. He will serve through April 2014.

Simms replaces John Sacco of Sierra Recycling and Demolition Inc., Bakersfield, Calif.

The elections were held during ISRI’s 2012 Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas, April 15-19, 2012.

Simms says, “I am honored to serve this association as our board chair and I look forward to building on the work that John and other past chairs have done on behalf of the association and the industry. While our foundation is strong and our momentum is building, we continue to face challenges that threaten our industry. I pledge to remain vigilant in protecting the scrap recycling industry and preserving our ability to create jobs, grow the economy and safeguard the environment.”

Among the other recently elected board members are Chair-Elect Douglas Kramer of Kramer Metals Inc., Los Angeles; Vice-Chair Mark Lewon of Utah Metal Works Inc., Salt Lake City; and Secretary-Treasurer Brian Shine of Manitoba Corp., Lancaster, N.Y.

“I’d like to be the first to congratulate Jerry and his fellow executive committee members on their elections and the commitment and hard work that they have already shown and I wish them luck moving forward as we continue to work on behalf of our industry,” Sacco says.


Riverside Engineering Expands Technical Staff
Riverside Engineering has expanded its technical staff with the addition of Nick Hoffman and Isaac Reyna.

Hoffman has a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. Prior to joining Riverside, Hoffman managed engineering and fabrication of metal scrap processing projects with Custom Engineering, Fort Wayne, Ind.

“Nick has the industry experience, engineering and project management skills that will fit perfectly with our open projects and bolster our customer service” says Riverside Engineering Randy Brace.

Hoffman will run a regional office in Fort Wayne and will be responsible for the design, technology integration and field installation of Riverside’s downstream separation and metal recovery systems.

Reyna recently graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio. While earning a degree in mechanical engineering, Reyna interned with the San Antonio-based scrap metal company Monterrey Iron.

Reyna will be responsible for assisting and improving the mechanical design of Riverside’s shredders and downstream systems. He also will support Riverside Engineering’s international sales territories.


GBB Adds to Staff
Solid waste management consulting firm Gershman, Brickner & Bratton Inc. (GBB), Fairfax, Va., has added Ljupka Arsova as a consultant.

A 2010 graduate of Columbia University with a master’s degree in earth and environmental engineering, Arsova has focused her work and education on solid waste management. Prior to completing her master’s degree at Columbia, she earned degrees in ecology and environmental protection from the University of Belgrade in Serbia as well as a master’s degree in sustainable development from Lund University in Sweden.
