ISA Adds Two Directors
The publicly held scrap metal recycling firm Industrial Services of America Inc. (ISA), Louisville, Ky., has appointed Timothy Hazlett and David Russell to its board of directors.
Hazlett is an attorney with experience with public companies. Russell has experience in the financial and risk management arenas.
Harry Kletter, ISA founder and chairman, says of the two additions, “Their vast knowledge and business experience will help grow our company to new levels. We are very fortunate to be able to add people with their experience to our board and we appreciate their desire to make ISA a bigger and more profitable company.”
WM Names New President of WM Recycle America
Waste Management (WM), Houston, has named William Caesar the new president of WM Recycle America, its wholly owned subsidiary. Caesar, formerly WM chief strategy officer, replaces Pat DeRueda, who returned to the company’s West group as area vice president for the Arizona/New Mexico area.
Steven Preston, WM executive vice president of finance, energy and recycling services, says, “Bill’s strategic mindset will be critical to expanding our footprint as well as the nature of the services we provide. In the short time he has been here, he has made a valuable impact on the company, and we expect he will continue to make such an impact with WMRA.”
Caraustar Hires New Operations Director for Recovered Fiber Group
Caraustar Industries Inc. has announced Michelle Thornhill has joined the company as operations director of its recovered fiber group, effective Jan. 9, 2012.
Thornhill comes to Caraustar from SP Newsprint/SP Recycling Corp., where she most recently held the position of vice president and general manager SP Recycling Corp. Thornhill also held the positions of regional controller at SP Newsprint and administrative manager/controller with Rock-Tenn.
SMM Announces Appointments
Sims Metal Management (SMM), based in New York City, has announced two senior management appointments, including the creation of a new position.
Alan Ratner, who had served as North America metals (operations) co-president, will now serve as group executive vice president, operations and SHEC (safety, health, environment and community).
Ratner will be responsible for directing SMM’s global SHEC initiative and driving areas like technology and operating best practices across the businesses.
SMM also has announced that it is consolidating its North America metals co-president positions. To fill the new role, Robert Kelman, previously North America metals (commercial) co-president, has been appointed North America metals president. He will now report to Daniel Dienst, group CEO.
Kelman has been in the metal recycling business for more than 25 years, working for Hugo Neu and its joint ventures. After SMM’s acquisition of Hugo Neu’s metal recycling assets in 2005, Kelman became president and COO of Sims Hugo Neu Corp.
He will be responsible for managing SMM’s North America business, including all commercial, operations, technology and SHEC functions.
TMS International Names Director of Marketing for Optimization Group
TMS International Corp., Glassport, Pa., the parent company of Tube City IMS Corp., has named Sara Hornby director of marketing for the optimization group segment of its raw materials and optimization group. She will be responsible for research, strategic planning and technical business development and sales and marketing.
“Research and development is a vital driver of innovation for the company,” says David Aronson, president and COO for TMS’ raw material and optimization group.“Our customers expect innovative service offerings, and Sara will help drive that goal. She will add strong leadership, structure and marketing presence and complement our software engineers as well as our account technicians who operate our liquid steel and alloy models with our customers.”
Previously, Hornby was a principal at Global Strategic Solutions, Charlotte, N.C. She also worked at Process Technology International Inc., Midrex Technologies Inc., Tenova Goodfellow, Air Liquide and British Steel Corp. In a number of her prior positions, Hornby was instrumental in developing melt technology enhancements for steel manufacturers.
Goldstein Group Names Human Resources VP
Alter Trading, St. Louis, has announced the appointment of Andrew Cole as vice president of human resources and organizational development for Goldstein Group Inc., whose subsidiaries include Alter Trading Corp. and Alter Co.
Cole comes to the company from battery company A123 Systems, Waltham, Mass., where he was the executive vice president of human resources and organizational development. In his new role with Goldstein Group, Cole will advise on all aspects of human resource planning and strategy.
Alter Trading Corp. operates 37 metal recycling facilities and five trading offices in eight states as well as a representative sales office in Hong Kong.
ERI Names Corporate Counsel
Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), a Fresno, Calif.-based electronics recycler, has appointed Tyler Browning its corporate counsel.
Browning most recently served for three years as a senior associate at Browning & Browning LLP and as director of business development and legal counsel for CP Inc., a holding company that administers, owns and develops branded consumer products.

Smurfit Kappa Names Operations Director for Recycling Division
Smurfit Kappa Recycling, based in Dublin, has appointed Matthew Berrill its operations director with overall responsibility for the company’s paper and board recycling collection business. He will oversee the production, logistical, environmental, quality, health and safety aspects of all seven of Smurfit Kappa’s recycling depots between Scotland and England. Berrill has worked in Smurfit Kappa Group’s packaging and containers business for more than 20 years.
Simon Weston, Smurfit Kappa Recycling managing director, says, “We are delighted that Matthew will be joining us from Smurfit Kappa Corrugated, bringing his knowledge and experience to the recycling collection side of our business. Our operations offer customers flexibility in supplying material to us while maintaining the highest standards, as recognized by our recent Carbon Trust Standard and BS EN ISO 14001 (environmental management system) accreditations.”
Smurfit Kappa recycles nearly 500,000 metric tons of recovered fiber per year. The company a operates in 30 countries, including 21 in Europe and nine in Latin America.
Roadnet Technologies Expands Sales Staff
Roadnet Technologies, the Baltimore-based vehicle routing and fleet management technology company, has hired Christopher Farmer as an account representative for its coastal territory. He was formerly a senior business development manager for Cirta Communications LLC.
In his new position, Farmer will address the needs of existing clients as well as identify and recruit potential new customers for Roadnet Technologies. This includes educating companies concerning Roadnet’s range of applications and products that offer vehicle routing and scheduling optimization, vehicle telematics, fuel management, real-time dispatch and GPS tracking for transportation fleets. Farmer also will assist customers throughout the technology evaluation stage.
He brings more than 15 years of diversified experience in sales and marketing, with a focus in the software and high technologies industries, to Roadnet Technologies.
