Columbus, Ohio-based Redemtech, a world leader in IT asset disposition and technology change management (TCM) services, has received e-Stewards Electronic Recycling Certification for all of its U.S. facilities.
The e-Stewards Certification is the new fully accredited, independently audited certification program developed by the Basel Action Network (BAN), Seattle, in collaboration with industry leaders and environmental groups.
Redemtech is the first company to achieve e-Stewards Certification for all of its U.S. facilities, accounting for two-thirds of e-Stewards facilities certified to date.
“The e-Stewards requirements align with our own environmental policy and so required no significant changes to our existing processes,” says Redemtech President Robert Houghton. “We felt it was important to move quickly with the certification process to provide large enterprises with a global partner they can trust to handle their e-waste with complete transparency and accountability and help the e-Stewards Standard become the industry standard for truly responsible e-waste management.”
Redemtech says it is pursuing e-Stewards Certification for its international TCM Centers in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Poland.
The e-Stewards Standard is written for international use and operates under the framework of the Basel Convention and the Basel Ban and prohibits the export of toxic material from electronics to developing nations. It also mandates that electronics be refurbished and reused, if possible, and recycled only as a last resort. The Standard places limitations on the use of landfill and incineration and forbids the use of prison labor in the recycling process. It incorporates the global ISO 14001 standard for environmental management systems plus many industry-specific performance requirements, including prohibiting shredding of mercury and requiring appropriate worker health and safety protections.
“Redemtech occupies a very unique niche in the business of recycling electronics and we are thrilled to have them as the first Certified e-Stewards Recycler with multiple U.S. locations certified,” says Jim Puckett, executive director of BAN. “Redemtech’s expanding global presence and focus on reuse of computer equipment enables enterprises to recycle responsibly no matter where their facilities are located. As an early adopter and e-Stewards Founder, Redemtech has demonstrated true leadership promoting and advocating for globally responsible electronics recycling.”
