Germany-based MeWa Recycling Maschinen und Anlagenbau GmbH has put a modern refrigeration equipment processing system into operation in Kematen, Austria.

“The system makes it possible to process CFC and pentane equipment at the same time, without them having to be sorted beforehand,” says MeWa managing director, Helmut Oberguggenberger.

In the new disposal facility, up to 300,000 refrigeration systems or 90, 000 tons of CFC a year will be processed, according to the press release. This equates to savings of around 900,000 tons of CO2 per year, the company says.

The patented Me Wa Querstromzerspaner (QZ) is capable of processing around 60 refrigeration devices per hour in an isolated system, the company says. With its rotating chains, the machine can entirely dismantle the individual fractions. The shredded PU foam is sieved off and freed from the CFC residue. The environmentally harmful gas is subsequently cooled in the cryo-condensation and liquefied; then collected in special containers and later disposed of.

After the MeWa-QZ has done its work, mechanical procedures then separate the iron, other metals and the plastics from one another. When cleanly separated, the products continue to generate high revenues, even in the current difficult market climate, the company says.

WPS Supplies Separation Technology To Sackers

Waste Processing Solutions, the new company created by the Finlay Group to cater specifically for the recycling market, has supplied a specialist material recovery facility to Sackers Recycling.

The Carmac Light Separating Unit C1200 is already increasing Sacker’s recovery of light material at its Ipswich-based plant by 20 percent.

With a patent pending, the Carmac LSU C1200 waste classifier is a lights separating system. Typical applications include the separation of wood and aggregates, as well as paper and plastics.

The system has various output options to a container skip or conveyor system.

Nigel Slinn, commercial director of Sackers, based in Gt Blakenham nr Ipswich, said: "We are predominantly a scrap metal processor, but five years ago moved into waste recycling and have seen year-on-year growth in the business.

"We currently divert up to 80 per cent of the waste we handle away from landfill.

"The new recovery facility from WPS is helping us to achieve that figure by increasing our capacity by 20 per cent, so it has been a valuable addition to our operations.

"Before making a choice, we looked at various material recovery facilities. The C1200 appealed because it deals with all waste streams, heavy and light, in one standard operation. The other machinery we looked at was not able to do that. The after sales support from WPS also appealed," said Slinn.

This is the first deal between WPS and Sackers.

Last year, WPS – part of the Stafford-based Finlay Group of companies - secured a sole distribution agreement with Carmac Waste Handling Systems spanning England and Wales.

"Carmac equipment is based on experience gained over 10 years in the recycling industry and we are able to provide the time-proven machinery with an extensive after sales service and support package," said David Statham, a WPS director.

The range of machinery designed by Northern Ireland-based Carmac handles a range of materials including construction, demolition, commercial, industrial and municipal waste.

Sita UK Launches Program to Combat Metal Theft

SITA UK is promoting its use of a new product that, the company feels, will be highly effective to combat the burgeoning theft of metal in the United Kingdom. The product, ‘SmartWater,’ is a forensic liquid that can be painted on to any item. Once applied, SmartWater assigns the metal with a DNA-style forensic signature which cannot be removed and is uniquely registered to its owner. The solution is almost invisible under natural light, but under ultraviolet light it glows bright green.

While police throughout the UK have equipped themselves with UV lights to detect stolen metals, Sita UK has become one of the first recyclers in the UK to follow suit and started checking for forensic liquid.

From now on all metals brought onto SITA UK sites will be checked under a UV light for traces of SmartWater before being processed. If any traces are found then SITA UK will reserve the right to refuse to handle the metals and where necessary will inform the appropriate authorities.

Sita UK, a subsidiary of Suez Environnement, is a recycling and waste management company.

Mascus Enters The South African Market of Used Machinery

Mascus, the Pan-European marketplace for construction, agricultural and material-handling machinery to forestry and groundscare machines, transportation vehicles has opened an office in the Republic of South Africa.

The South African office marks the first Mascus office outside Europe and the 25th office Mascus has established worldwide. “In 2008, we have been constantly expanding our European presence and have opened another eight European countries to the Mascus brand,” says Fredrik Larsson, Mascus’ managing director. “With the new office in South Africa we are no longer only a truly Pan-European marketplace for used machinery, as we are entering new continent.”

The new Mascus office is opened in partnership with the South African classified media company Junk Mail Publishing. Junk Mail Publishing runs various Internet marketplaces for buying and selling from used and new cars, trucks, trailers, plant machinery and motorcycles to jobs, real estates and other horizontal classified portals and publications.

Junk Mail Publishing has appointed John L. Smith to the position of Mascus South African Country and sales manager, and he has already started selling Mascus’ services on the South African market. “Even though the South African Mascus Web site, www.mascus.co.za, is running from just three weeks, there are already local African dealers placing used construction machines, trucks, tractors, harvesters, forklifts and groundscare machines,” Smith says.

Repant Acquiring Equipment Manufacturer

Repant ASA, based in Norway, has signed a letter of intent to acquire the Finnish RVM company Bevesys Finland OY, based in Finland. Repant manufactures reverse vending machines

The acquisition will be made through a combination of issuing shares of stock, as well as cash payment.

Bevesys also is involved in producing and delivering reverse vending machines for retail stores. In addition to Finland, Bevesys has expanded its operations to include the installation of equipment at retail stores in Austria and Croatia. Bevesys also has facilities in Denmark, the Czech Republic and the Benelux countries.

Olav Madsen, CEO of Repant, says that the agreement will strengthen Repant’s business in the European market, including regions where Bevesys already has a presence.

The two companies will coordinate an action plan within product- and marketing strategy, production and management. "This will make us a more powerful player in the RVM market and give us access to markets where we are not represented today," said Madsen.

Due diligence on the acquisition is expected to be made in the near future.

Eldan Offers Refrigerator Recycling System

Eldan Recycling A/S, based in Denmark, is offering what it calls a complete system for the recycling of end-of-life refrigerators.

“Apart from separation and recycling of magnetic and non-magnetic metals, plastic and foam, oil and CFC gasses [also] must be collected,” says an Eldan news release. “This is done in separate oil extraction and degasification systems enabling the companies to show that they collect the dangerous greenhouse gasses that damage the ozonosphere.”

Eldan says its system complies with European and national standards. The company has announced that it recently installed an 80 units-per-hour plant in Spain. “Similar plants are in operation worldwide and they observe the [legal standards] for treatment of cooling appliances,” according to Eldan.

Eldan Recycling bills itself as a “turnkey supplier of complete plants [from] the first approach over the projecting stage to the customized solution. The company says its Eldan technical staff “is responsible for design and development just as Eldan Recycling’s project managers and supervisors are in charge of the project work, installation, assembly, training and commissioning of the plant.”

Eldan says it also offers service and maintenance of the processing systems and machines and spare and wear parts to its customers worldwide.

Eldan Recycling A/S has company roots dating back to 1956. In addition to its refrigerator recycling system the company develops and manufactures plants for the recycling of scrap tires, cable and wire, electronic scrap and nonferrous scrap, including aluminum. The company’s American office is located in Sanborn, N.Y.
