Ampacet offers new line of black masterbatches
REC-NIR-Black: Ampacet’s black masterbatches are near-infrared (NIR) transparent, so containers incorporating them can be sorted for recycling using NIR optical sensors. NIR sorting, used in many recycling facilities, is limited by its inability to identify and separate plastics that contain carbon black, the most commonly used black pigment. But packaging using REC-NIR-Black masterbatch products can be scanned using NIR technology for automated sorting, allowing the recycling of black packaging scrap.
What’s new? REC-NIR-Black High Alcohol is suitable for monolayer polyethylene terephthalate bottles and containers containing products with a high proportion of alcohol, such as wine and spirits, hand sanitizers, household cleaners, personal care products and pharmaceuticals. The new grade is the result of the company’s sustainable development program to create products that help protect the environment.
Benefits: Sustainability. Using the masterbatch can keep black plastic packaging out of landfills and reduce its carbon footprint by allowing it to have a second life.

Washing line promises reduced maintenance costs, downtime
Self-Cleaning Friction Cleaner Type SCFC 800-2000: This unit from STF Maschinen und Anlagenbau GmbH, Aicha vorm Wald, Germany, has been developed especially for cleaning postconsumer plastic flakes; it also is appropriate for film recycling. It can be installed after the cutting mill or stationed after the hot- or postwasher. The unit features 87 changeable and replaceable blades that generate a centrifugal force of 1,050 rpm and a self-cleaning screen basket that turns in the opposite direction of the rotor. Water and impurities are pressed through a four-component, stainless steel screen into a collection system that’s part of the base frame. In the U.S., it is available through Zimmer America.
What’s new? The wash line unit.
Benefits: Flakes that are nearly free of water and contamination, leading to higher yields. The self-cleaning unit reduces downtime. The design also protects the screen, ensuring it will not need to be replaced as often compared with similar units, reducing costs and downtime.

Masterbatches available in customizable colors
Rejoin PCR: Avient’s new line of masterbatches can include colorants and functional additives in one formulation. The products are designed to be incorporated into recycled polyolefins that are used in packaging applications.
What’s new? The product line, which came out in March. Unlike other masterbatches, it uses postconsumer polyolefin rather than virgin resin as the carrier resin. The new masterbatch is available in customizable colors and with special effects.
Benefits: The ability to make 100-percent-recycled-resin packaging. Typically, finished products made with masterbatches that use virgin material as a carrier resin contain 3 to 5 percent virgin plastic; Avient’s masterbatch makes it possible for molders to use 100-percent-recycled resin—a promise that growing numbers of consumer goods companies are making. Rejoin PCR masterbatch can be added during production using standard equipment with little to no impact on processing. In addition, it allows for full recyclability of the end product.

Washing line features compact design
Hydro washer: With a footprint measuring 32 square feet, this BoReTech washing line has a high-speed cleaning mode and special internal structure designed to remove impurities and additives from the surface of polyethylene terephthalate flakes. In the U.S., John Xu represents the Chinese company. He can be contacted at john@bo-re-tech.com or at sales@bo-re-tech.com.
What’s new? A more compact design, which was released last year.
Benefits: A minimal footprint, with greater rinsing efficiency than traditional vertical rinsing equipment. The washing line combines the functions of hot washing and rinsing. Compared with its predecessor, the Hydro washer also uses less energy. The unit is efficient and stable in operation and easy to maintain.
