Two professional soccer teams in Portland, Oregon, have partnered with The Electronics Reuse & Recycling Alliance (TERRA) and its Done with IT mail-in recycling program to provide their fans in the U.S. and Canada with sustainable electronics recycling options. Done with IT offers responsible end-of-life electronics recycling services as well as refurbishment and reuse of devices to return to students in need.
The Portland Timbers, a men’s professional soccer club, and the Portland Thorns FC, a women’s professional soccer team, are now involved with the Done with IT program. Through this new partnership, a portion of collected devices will be distributed to students in Portland and surrounding communities that lack access to laptops and tablets required to participate in remote learning and virtual classrooms due to coronavirus-based closures.
“For years, the Timbers and Thorns have innovated numerous sustainability efforts,” says Blair Neelands, sustainability and outreach coordinator at the Portland Timbers and Thorns. “It’s only fitting that we are the first to launch this new program that addresses so many important issues to the league and organization, including COVID-19 best-practices, climate change, digital equity and recycling.”
According to a news release from Done with IT, Portland Timbers and Thorns fans can visit donewithit.org/standtogether and select an appropriate recycling product. After completing the online checkout, fans will receive a prepaid, printable shipping label via email within 24 hours. After receiving the shipping label, fans can pack their devices in a box, attach the label and ship it to Done with IT.
“TERRA is very excited to launch this first-of-its-kind partnership with the Timbers and Thorns,” says Steven Napoli, president and CEO of TERRA, adding that the company is hopeful to expand its Done with IT program to other Major League Soccer teams to provide fans with the opportunity to sustainably recycle electronics.
TERRA’s electronics reuse and recycling services are provided locally by R2-certified Far West Recycling (FWR). TERRA says fans that live outside of Oregon may have their recycling distributed to one of 25 participating certified recycling facilities in the Done with IT network.
