Placon Corp., a plastics recycling firm headquartered in Madison, Wis., recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new plastics recycling facility in Fitchburg, Wis. The groundbreaking took place on Aug. 25. The new facility is being built adjacent to the company’s headquarters and manufacturing facility, according to local press reports.
An earlier press release notes that when the new facility is completed, Placon will be the first thermoforming company in the consumer packaging industry to implement its own in-house recycling operation. With the new facility, the company will receive curbside collected bottles to clean, grind and extrude into sheet.
The project is scheduled to be built in two phases: the first phase is scheduled to be complete by the end of this year; the second phase is scheduled to be complete by the first quarter of next year.
Assisting in the project has been the state of Wisconsin, which provided $250,000 in tax credits to the company. The project’s cost is expected to total around $8 million.
The first phase of the project will include the installation of an additional extruder for its EcoStar rollstock. The second phase of the project will be the addition of the bottle washing equipment.
The company adds that additional extruders could be installed at the facility in the future.
