Marathon’s Gordon Shaw to Retire
Gordon C. Shaw
has announced his intention to retire as president of Marathon Equipment Co., Vernon, Ala.Shaw, who has spent 27 years in the waste and recycling equipment industry, became president of Marathon in 2003. He began his sales career in 1981, becoming vice president of sales and marketing and later an executive vice president with the company.
"The waste equipment industry has certainly benefited from Gordon’s direction and counsel," says Dave Ropp, CEO of Dover Industrial Products, Marathon’s parent company. "Marathon’s employees, customers and I will always be grateful for the leadership and guidance he has provided over the years."
Shaw’s retirement will be effective Feb. 28, 2010.
Genesis Attachments Announces Leadership Change
Genesis Attachments, Superior, Wis., has announced the departure of General Manager Bruce Bacon and the appointment of Mats Ceder to that position. Bacon, one of the company’s co-founders, will stay on for a some time to ensure a smooth transition before leaving to start a new, non-competing company.
"My commitment to keeping the Genesis brand one of the most respected in the industry has never wavered, and I leave confidant in the knowledge that Mats Ceder shares that commitment," Bacon says.
Ceder, whose appointment became official Jan. 1, 2009, joined Paladin, Genesis’ parent company, in early 2008 as director of business development in the heavy construction division. Prior to joining the company, he held sales and marketing positions with motion control manufacturer Parker Hannifin and hydraulics specialist Rexroth.
"Given the current state of the scrap recycling and construction markets, these are some of the most challenging times our customers have seen in a long time," Ceder says. "Fortunately, we manufacture the kind of products that can help them maximize their potential—and their bottom line—and I’m excited to be able to play a key role in helping make that happen."
Smurfit-Stone Elects Steven J. Klinger to Board of Directors
Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., Creve Coeur, Mo., has elected Steven J. Klinger to its board of directors.
"Steve’s leadership has been instrumental in assisting me to transform our company’s operations," says Patrick J. Moore, chairman and CEO. "This has resulted in upgraded talent, improved ability to meet our customers’ needs, greater productivity, improved cost structure and a strategically aligned sales and marketing team. We look forward to Steve’s future contributions as a board member."
Klinger is president and CEO of Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. He joined the company in May 2006 from Georgia-Pacific, where he most recently served as executive vice president of packaging, pulp and global procurement.
Klinger is a graduate of Georgia State University with a degree in accounting. He is also a graduate of Duke University’s Advanced Management Program.
Klinger is a member of the board of directors of Navistar International Corp. He has served on the board of directors of the International Corrugated Case Association, The Atlanta Academy and on the Board of Advisers for Georgia State University’s School of Business. He is also a former chairman of the board of the Fibre Box Association and a former board member of St. Jude’s House and Transition House.
AbitibiBowater Appoints New Chairman
AbitibiBowater Inc., Montreal, has appointed Richard B. Evans to the post of chairman of the company’s board of directors.
Evans previously served as a director of AbitibiBowater and is a member of the board of directors of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Ltd. He has announced his retirement from the Rio Tinto Boards, effective in April. Evans also served as chief executive of Rio Tinto Alcan, until he retired from this position Feb. 1.
Evans is the former CEO of Alcan Inc., current chairman of the board of the International Aluminum Institute, past chairman of the U.S. Aluminum Association and a director of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives.
A graduate of Oregon State University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, he also holds a master’s in management from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
David J. Paterson, president and chief executive officer, says, "As we continue our work to better position the company, we will benefit from Dick’s extensive experience and business insight."
In other news, AbitibiBowater also has announced that John W. Weaver resigned Feb. 1 as non-executive chair and that Gordon D. Giffin has retired from the board of directors.
Green Metals Promotes Cecil
Green Metals Inc. has promoted Steve Cecil to president. He has been with the company since March 2001 and previously served as executive vice president and COO.
The company, a subsidiary of Toyota Tshusho, provides scrap metal recycling support to Toyota Motor Manufacturing operations globally.
The company, founded in 2000, has North American operations in Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, California and Ontario. Additionally, the company has facilities in England, France, Poland, South Africa, Thailand, China and Japan.
Green Metals in cooperation with its sister company ARK/Toyota Tsusho, provides recycling and waste management services.
Roll-Rite Names New Sales Manager
Keith Lowe has joined Roll-Rite LLC as sales manager, waste and recycling markets, covering the Southern and Western regions of North America.
Lowe is responsible for Roll-Rite’s tarp system sales into the refuse, recycling and scrap industries.
He has experience in the refuse and recycling industries, having held a variety of sales management and national account positions with refuse equipment manufacturers and most recently with two tarp system manufacturers.
Based in Alger, Mich., Roll-Rite LLC manufactures electric tarp systems and components, serving the work truck industry.
US Steel Names Sommers GM
United States Steel Corp. has named Malisa Sommers general manager, global materials management and procurement operations. Sommers succeeds Thomas Coughlin, who has retired.
In her new position, Sommers is responsible for parts and materials inventory management, procurement support activities and the company’s contractor safety program in North America and Central Europe. She reports to Senior Vice President of Procurement, Real Estate, Raw Materials & Integration Christopher J. Navetta.
