In Memoriam: Rep. Paul Gillmor

Robin Wiener, president of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), has released a statement praising the career of recently deceased Ohio Congressman Paul Gillmor.

The Republican congressman from Ohio was found dead in his northern Virginia residence Wednesday, Sept. 5, according to published reports.

"The scrap recycling industry lost a friend today in Congressman Paul Gillmor, who provided strong leadership on recycling issues and served as the co-chair of the bi-partisan House Recycling Caucus," Wiener writes in the statement. "His early support for establishing the House Recycling Caucus was vital, especially in recruiting so many members."

Wiener adds, "Congressman Gillmor’s dedication to recycling was evident when his subcommittee held hearings concerning electronics recycling last year. Even in the minority and no longer a member of the committee with jurisdiction over recycling issues, he remained steadfast in his commitment and was excited about leading his fellow members of the caucus. His ability to work across party lines made him a great fit as co-chair of the House Recycling Caucus."

Wiener concludes the statement with, "Our sympathies go out to Congressman Gillmor’s family, friends and staff. He will be missed."

Skumatz Receives Swana Recycling Honor

Lisa A. Skumatz has been recognized by the International Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) with its Robert L. Lawrence Distinguished Achievement Award.

The award was presented to Skumatz during a mid-October awards luncheon held at SWANA’s annual WasteCon Conference, which took place in Reno this year.

The award, not given every year, is intended to honor outstanding and meritorious service to the solid waste field and is recognized as the "highest accolade the solid waste field bestows," according to SWANA.

SWANA is comprised of some 7,700 people from the solid waste industry.

This is Skumatz’ second national lifetime achievement award, following a lifetime achievement recognition from the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) in 2001.

Skumatz owns environmental/sustainability consulting firm Skumatz Economic Research Associates, Superior, Colo. She works nationally and internationally, with her time split equally between the recycling/solid waste management field and the energy efficiency/conservation field. Her work concentrates on measuring the effects of conservation initiatives, assessing best performing programs and trying to make "green" programs more cost-effective and sustainable.
