Link-Belt Construction Equipment Co.

Keiji Saito has been named CFO/vice president manufacturing and added to the board of directors of Link-Belt Construction Equipment Co., Lexington, Ky. Saito will act as a liaison between Link-Belt Construction Co. and its parent, Sumitomo Construction Machinery Co., to coordinate the companies’ worldwide crane strategy.

Link-Belt has also announced that John Toher has been appointed director, customer support. Toher, in his new position, will be responsible for parts, service and technical support for Link-Belt Construction Equipment products worldwide.

The company has also named Bruce Kabalen as sales promotion specialist within its marketing communications department. Kabalen will be responsible for development and maintenance of sales literature, in both electronic and written formats.

Also at Link-Belt, Thomas (Mickey) Hammers has been named as product specialist-lattice cranes. He will be responsible for new lattice crane product development as well as identifying and cultivating lattice crane market opportunities.

National Recycling Coalition

Frances Kennedy, Tetra Pak, will succeed Catherine Wilt as president of The National Recycling Coalition, Alexandria, Va.

Also elected to leadership positions were: Catherine Wilt, University of Tennessee Waste Management Research and Education Institute, as chair; Amy Jo Labi-Carando, Lawrence County Department of Recycling and Solid Waste, as vice-president; Daniel J. Kemna, Pepsi-Cola Co., as treasurer; and Jana Schimpff, Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, as Secretary. Elected as at-large members of the executive committee were: Gregory Crawford, Steel Recycling Institute; Jenni Worster, Ohio Department of National Resources; and Lisa Skumatz, Skumatz Economic Research Associates.

Balcones Recycling

Carlos Rovelo has joined Balcones Recycling Inc., Austin, Texas, as president of Latin American Business Operations. "Rovelo’s talents and respect in the industry will enhance our efforts," says Kerry Getter, CEO of Balcones. The company bills itself as the largest independent high-grade paper recycler in the southwest and exports a significant amount of fiber to Mexico.

"This is more than a paper effort," says Rovelo. "It’s a trade and relationship effort focused on both buying and selling in Mexico and other Latin countries. NAFTA is a two-way opportunity with rich potential."

Rovelo was previously employed by Rock-Tenn Recycling, Dallas, as director-market development of the southwest region.

Recycling Industries Inc.

Thomas J. Wiens, chairman and CEO of Recycling Industries Inc., Englewood, Colo., has received the 1998 Rocky Mountain Area Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the industrial and fabricated products category.

Under Wiens’ leadership, Recycling Industries has become one of the largest metal recycling businesses in the nation, with 42 facilities in 12 states. The company made a series of acquisitions in 1997 and early 1998 to achieve its growth.

Recycling Industries also announced that Daniel C. Gascoyne has joined the company as director of nonferrous commercial development. Gascoyne will coordinate the nonferrous activities of the company’s 42 facilities.

In Memoriam: David J. Joseph Jr.

David J. Joseph Jr., grandson of the founder of Cincinnati-based David J. Joseph Co., passed away in late September at the age of 82. David J. Joseph Jr. served on the board of the company that carries his father’s name until the early 1990s. He was president of the firm from 1945 until 1978. He resided in the Cincinnati area throughout most of his life and was known there for his talent as a concert pianist and his involvement in performing arts organizations.
