Paper Recycling with a German Accent

Paper recyclers gather in Frankfurt for the 2010 European Paper Recycling Conference.

Recovered paper merchants, brokers, consumers, mill representatives and equipment and service providers prepare to gather in Frankfurt Nov. 3-4 to discuss the latest market trends and the issues foremost on the minds of recyclers and traders at the 2010 European Paper Recycling Conference. The Recycling Today Media Group and Pira International are organizing the conference, which is designed to bring the supply and consuming sides of the industry together to create an active dialogue and generate trading opportunities. The event is billed as “the leading meeting place for the Pan-European Paper Recycling industry.”

The European Paper Recycling Conference is now in its sixth year. Last year’s forum attracted nearly 150 delegates from 18 countries to Brussels, the host city. This year’s conference is expected to draw more than 200 representatives from the paper merchant, mill operating and waste collection sectors.

A diverse range of programming has been planned for the event, which begins Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 10:15 a.m., with the session titled “Navigating Troubled Waters: Economic Overview.” This session offers a perspective on economic conditions in Europe and the factors likely to affect the economy in the near future.

The session topics to be covered at the 2010 European Paper Recycling Conference include:

  • Navigating Troubled Waters: An Economic Overview–This session offers a perspective on the economic conditions in Europe and the factors likely to affect the economy in the near future.
  • Hot Topics in Fiber Collection–This session offers updates on legislation, legal issues and other trends that are likely to impact the future of recovered paper collection in the European Union.
  • The Future is Far From Paperless–The condition of the global paper industry is the focus of this session, which features speakers examining demand for paper in packaging and print applications and how this may affect recovered paper demand and pricing.
  • Shipping: From Here to There–Cost trends, service levels and regulations affecting the many ways recovered fiber is moved, from overland transport to ocean shipping, is this session’s focus.
  • Investing in Recycling’s Future–This session features the views and stories of paper makers who are investing for the future.
  • One World, Several Markets–This session travels the globe to offer updates on market conditions for recovered paper in both established and emerging markets.
  • Recovery Plant Operations: Striving for Quality–Speakers at this session provide updates on the current technology available to optimize plant operations, efficiency, grade quality and safety within recycling depots.
  • The Pricing and Profit Equation–The closing session summarizes the supply and demand trends affecting the pricing of major recovered paper grades.

Also on Nov. 3 is the session titled “Hot Topics in Fiber Collection.” Speakers provide updates on legislation and regulations in Europe that affect the way secondary fiber is collected and who controls it as it enters the recycling loop.

In the session tiled “The Future is Far from Paperless,” also scheduled for Nov. 3, speakers from prominent paper manufacturing companies provide an update on demand for their finished products and the ongoing role they will play as consumers of secondary fiber.

The condition of the global paper industry is the focus of this session, and topics include the development of plantations to serve as new pulp sources and how they may affect recovered paper demand and pricing.

The final session Wednesday, “Transportation & Logistics,” looks at cost trends, service levels and regulations affecting the movement of recovered fiber.

Thursday, Nov. 4, begins with the “Mill Buyers Panel,” in which speakers share their views on the primary trends affecting recovered paper markets.

In the session “One World, Several Markets,” speakers offer their updates on market conditions for recovered paper in established and emerging markets.

Also on Thursday is the session “Recovery Plant Technology.” Speakers at this session provide updates on the current technology available to optimize plant operations, efficiency, grade quality and safety within recycling depots.

ThThe final conference session, “The Pricing and Profit Equation,” summarizes the supply and demand trends affecting the pricing of recovered paper grades.
