Heating Up
Enviro-Log describes itself as the nation’s largest recycler of waxed old corrugated cardboard (WOCC) and the third largest producer of fire logs in North America. Omni Environmental Services has rated the company’s fire logs safe for use applications such as wood stoves, chiminea garden heaters, campfires and as a cooking fuel.
“We were intrigued with the overall closed-loop concept—it just seemed very logical,” says Sam Miller, Enviro-Log recycling division vice president. “The fire log really performed well, and the raw material was abundant. The market seemed to want a cleaner burning alternative—a true wood substitute. So, we decided to step out and commercialize the concept, and retailers have been embracing our unique product.”
Enviro-Log has been producing fire logs since 2004.While the company currently has one facility in Fitzgerald, Ga., Miller says expansion plans have targeted the West Coast and Midwest. He also offers the following thoughts on Enviro-Log’s operations:
Q: What new services or initiatives have you introduced recently?
A: We work with our customers to divert as much from the landfill as possible. We are committed to helping our customers get on the path to zero waste.
Q: What makes you different from your competitors?
A: We are a steady outlet for WOCC in the United States, and most paper mills see WOCC as a contaminant to their process. We are able to take OCC with our WOCC, which makes the sort at the point of generation very simple.
Q: Where do you see your company five years from now?
A: Enviro-Log will be a two-plant operation with a strong recycling division, recycling over 100 million pounds of WOCC annually.
