Republic Services to acquire ReCommunity
Republic Services Inc., Phoenix, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Charlotte, North Carolina-based ReCommunity Holdings II Inc., the largest independent recycling processing company in the U.S. Republic says ReCommunity’s assets and expertise complement its recycling operations and will allow it to meet its customers’ growing demand for recycling in multiple markets.
The acquisition involves 26 recycling centers in 14 states, primarily in locations where Republic maintains a leading market presence. Combined, these facilities recover nearly 1.6 million tons of recycled commodities annually. The transaction also includes the assumption of multiple long-term municipal agreements with processing fee-based structures, which aligns with Republic’s pricing model.
“We believe this transaction will enable us to meet growing customer demand for recycling services, while achieving one of our key sustainability goals,” says Republic President and CEO Don Slager. “Recycling continues to be one of the fastest growing segments of the waste stream, and our focus remains on investing in traditional recycling in select and prioritized markets where customers have demonstrated both a demand and a willingness to pay for recycling.”
ReCommunity CEO Dennis McGill says, “With this acquisition, we are joining a company committed to the same environmental and community ideals and will be able to deliver a broader range of services to our customers.”
Canada Fibers acquires HGC Management
Toronto-headquartered Canada Fibers Ltd. (CFL), a leading provider of material recovery and recycling services, has announced its plan to acquire the issued and outstanding common shares of HGC Management Inc. (HGC), Brantford, Ontario. CFL says HGC’s goal of helping municipal and commercial customers efficiently and sustainably divert valuable materials from landfill aligns with its own. The company says it expects to complete the transaction within 60 days.
HGC operates seven material recovery facilities (MRFs) within the province of Ontario in the cities of Brantford, Belleville, Cornwall, Peterborough, Simcoe and Trenton. Together, these MRFs sort a significant portion of Blue Box materials within Ontario. In addition, HGC has 75 trucks on the road collecting recyclables and mixed waste from homeowners.
The acquisition will increase CFL’s MRF footprint within Ontario, adding coverage in the eastern and western reaches of the province. HGC’s curbside collection capabilities will increase CFL’s understanding of recycling opportunities at the source.
“This acquisition will enable us to provide provincewide sorting services for our expanding commercial and municipal customer bases, which is increasingly important as customers look for greater uniformity and efficiency from their recycling programs,” says Mark Badger of CFL. “It will provide us with more recovered material for our downstream operations, which recycle recovered materials into consumer and industrial products.”
CFL operates three recycling companies under the Urban Resource Group banner, producing plastic materials for applications that include packaging, architectural wooden garden mulch and high-energy wooden fuel pellets sold through leading big-box stores.
Herb Lambacher, HGC founder, says, “The combined MRF footprint of the organizations will enable provincewide programs for customers seeking enhanced efficiency and sustainability.”
CFL will work to increase recovery of materials from commercial sources during the first phase of integration.
Lambacher, an engineer with more than 40 years of experience in the recycling industry, will lead legacy HGC operations and help integrate and expand MRF operations.
