Liberty Iron and Metal, based in Erie, Pa., has announced plans to invest around $6 million on an expansion project in eastern Ohio. The company broke ground on the shredder late last month and expects to have the shredder operational by the end of this year.
The site of the new facility is on around 50 acres, and is located at an existing facility that was home to Mercer Industries.
The project, to be built in Girard, Ohio, will include a Texas Shredder 8104, 4,000 horsepower auto shredder, supported by an Eriez Magnetics nonferrous system.
According to reports, the location is near a number of other scrap metal facilities, and is expected to bring jobs to the region. Also, the location is ideal because it is located near a railroad, which will allow Liberty Iron to ship to end consumers in the area.
The shredder is expected to allow the company to process around 15,000 tons of ferrous scrap a month.
While the project is significant in its own right, Mark Olgin, a top official with Liberty Iron, said the company is building an identical Texas Shredder system at the company's Phoenix location.
The construction firm CR Meyer is doing the installation of both shredders.
