The plastics manufacturer IPL Inc. has been awarded a contract by the City of Kelowna, B.C., on behalf of the Regional District of Central Okanagan and its member municipalities. The contract is valued at more than $7.2 million to manufacture and distribute wheeled carts. The carts will be delivered between January and April 2009.
Under the terms of the agreement, IPL will supply 157,000 carts with capacities of 120, 240 and 360 liters to be used in the collection of waste, organic waste and recyclable materials. In addition, the cart will be equipped with radio frequency identification tags enabling the compilation of key statistics required to optimize the City’s and the District’s waste management program.
The deal with Kelowna follows a similar deal with the city of Calgary, Alberta, which is expected to result in sales of more than $15 million. Under terms of that agreement, IPL will initially supply 320,000, 240-litre carts as well as provide additional carts over a ten-year period to account for Calgary’s population growth.
"IPL is proud to have been selected for this mandate, our second significant one in Western Canada in the last few months," said Serge Bragdon, president and CEO of IPL. "Our ability to meet stringent customer specifications and to meet a tight delivery schedule, combined with a product of superior quality, confirms IPL’s leadership in the development of innovative technical solutions in the environment sector."
